GPU Upgrade Time

Go to solution Solved by 007agentHP,

It's an old technology, you sure it will hold up ? They say that the GCN cards will support dx12 tho.

i have the 280x, and it plays the games i play @ 1080p 60fps on ultra and the 280 isnt far behind. its a great card

Hey guys, so it's time for an upgrade. I've been so hung up on reviews, benchmarks etc on GPU's latley because im looking for a good GPU that will last for a while but not costing me so much. Yes i thought of going for a GTX 970 but its overprcied here in my country, it's 370 euros and im so not paying that much, best thing i can do is order from another country but im not so sure because im just looking to game at 1080p, the real question here is will 2GB of VRAM be enoguh for like 3 years, for atleast running games over medium settings at 1080p with a stable, smoooth framerate ? The GTX 960 was a big disappointment, if it was 200$ here maybe it would be a bang for the buck, but it's not. I had my eye on the GTX 760, the 2 gig version,  but will it be enough ? I was thinking of waiting for a 960 Ti because of maxwell and DX 12 and it's upcoming bonuses but no one knows when will the games utilize this.

My current specs :

Antec HCG-620 PSU
Intel i5 4440
MSI H81M-P33

8GB of Corsair Vengance 1600MHz
GPU - better not mention it but here it goes, a XFX 9600GT

Thanks for the read!

Yeah i was leaning towards it, shame the 285 doesn't have more VRAM. I'll think it through some more, thanks for sharing your advice, appreciate it!

better off with a 290/x right now if you need an upgrade. the long term performance will be more stable.

Consider a R9 290/290X if they don't cost much more than a 280X. At 1080p it will plough through every game in the next few years. Its a good hedge against shitty ports and will hold its value for longer than weaker cards.

Yeah i thought about that too, but heard some people complaining about the noise and heat output, on the other side i saw it uses much power, will a 600W be enoguh ?

My antec's got 48A on the 12V and the max output on it is 576W, thoguh i think it's enough will it be good on a long term since the PSU wears out ?

I was playing a bit of dragonage inquisition earlier, with 2x 290s under full load and my cpu under heavy load I didn't see much past 650 watts peak draw From the wall, which is somewhere between 500-550watts from psu. I have a moderately overclocked system as well, if that is any indication. A system with a single 290 is never going to touch 600 watts unless it's paired with a 9590. Even then maybe not.

With your cpu you're looking at probably 350 watt draw under heavy load on the psu with a 290

That's plenty. I have an Antec PSU with 576W on the +12V rail (Antec Neo Eco 620C) and Sapphire tech support told me I'd be fine running their Tri-X R9 290 on it.

Thought as much, found a chart from Tom's Hardware it used like 336W max on ultra in Metro Last Light. Still even that peak isn't that scary, considering i don't have much stuff hooked up on the PSU.

Im glad to hear that, i think ill be more comfortable with an 290(x) then a 280(x) hence the 4GB and 512Bit bus. I'll check what i can find in my wallet, think im gonna get a Core v51 since I'll need a new case, thanks for the help guys, when i finish my build I'll post some screens. Cheers.
