I want to build a PC for gaming, and maybe some editing. I want to get a AMD CPU because of the price. Is the 8350 still a great option? Is there any other option around that price? I want to use it with an asus maximus VII, or is there a better option for about the same price?

The 4690k is pretty much all around better; the 8350 is only better in a handful of virtualization cases.

Also, the 8350 isn't exactly cheaper once you consider that you need a more expensive board and cooler.

Whats your total budget, location, and does that budget include an os/peripherals/monitor?

It seems like your budget is set pretty high if you're getting a Maximus and an 8350. For that price, go with a Xeon or i5. Better performance than the 8350 and you get an upgrade path

i5-4690k destroys the 8350 99% of games and still beats it in the 1% of games that utilize all 8 cores.

The i5-4690k, when both overclocked, is >= the 8350 in multithreaded tasks (like video rendering).

The 8350 is not a good choice for almost any reason at this point in time.

A long read, but some of these links will (hopefully) show you how bad the FX processors currently are for gaming and provide sources for my claims.

My total budget is around $850-950 dolars. I'm in CO, US. And that is only for the PC itself

Do you live near a Microcenter?  I know that there is one in Denver.  If so, buy your CPU + Mobo in store there.  If you have to drive for an hour, it is most definitely worth the trip to save $50+

And just like everyone else said, do not buy an AMD CPU if your purpose is gaming, it is not cheaper, and it performs worse in every game.

This is definitely on the upper end of your budget, and let me explain some of my rationale for the components.

I picked out a very high end case for $100.  You can easily get by with a $50 case and be just fine, but I choose something more high end that you can build into as you make future upgrades.  It is a Full Tower, and because you are an exchange student, I am not sure if you want something this big.  Maybe you want something with a small form factor so that you can transport it easily.  If that is the case, then we need to rework the build a little bit.

I also didn't select a CPU cooler.  I figure a CPU cooler can easily be added at any time as you get more money, whereas you cannot exchange out cases as easily.  In my mind, it is better to buy a very high end case that will last you many future builds instead of a mid range case and a mid range CPU cooler.  By going with the high end chassis, you can later buy a very nice CPU cooler as more money becomes available.  You don't have to do this at all, this is just my opinion.  You will be perfectly well off if you buy a mid range case, which are still very good, and buy a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO CPU Cooler.

Only thing i would change here would be the slow memory. People need to stop buying 1600.

Sorry dude, but RAM has almost no impact on performance, it is negligible when it comes to games.  Also, 16GB is not necessary, 8GB is all you need.

Two issues with this. Firstly, memory speed has absolutely no affect on gaming (it does if you're using an APU). Secondly, anything 'faster' than 1600mhz is overclocked, and can actually cause cpu instability limiting your cpu overclock (and your cpu overclock is MUCH more important than a memory overclock). I've ran my ram at both 2400mhz and 1600mhz and had absolutely no difference in performance, except after setting it back to 1600mhz I was able to push my cpu much further.

The only reason I was suggesting 16gb was because he said he was going to do some editing, but didn't really specify how much. Also, I would avoid 970s for the time being due to the 3.5gb VRAM.

Your DDR4 system is also running in quad channel and with a larger cache as well as a few other differences. But again, I still find it hard to believe the difference is more than an fps or two, which is within margin of error.

That is DDR4 vs. DDR3, and if I'm not mistaken, those are benchmarks provided by Corsair, they are biased, of course they want to make it seem like the game performs better with faster RAM.  I have tested it myself, going between 2400Mhz and 1600Mhz. The difference is 1-2fps when playing online, and no difference in single player.

Check out this Memory Scaling with Haswell Study by Anandtech.  The difference is minimal. Unfortunately they don't test BF4, but based on what I did personally, the difference is right in line with what they are showing in that study.

Single player isnt demanding, Multiplayer will show the best gains with faster memory. Also max fps will remain unchanged, Min fps will rise with faster memory

Alright, so why don't you show me some proof of faster RAM being beneficial. Go play BF4 at normal speed and then underclock your RAM and play again and post the actual results rather than the BS you're making up now.

I've ran my system at both 1600mhz and 2400mhz, and there was absolutely no difference in gaming.
