HDD Reduce Noise

Go to solution Solved by Captain_WD,

Hi Guys,

My WD Caviar Green and my Laptop HDD is making the same noise

this is the noise from my PC : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHja_DwCeHw 0:08 - 0:21

if u cant here the sound from my video , i found something similiar on youtube (but mine is quieter)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EV6pLzcRb0 0:51 - 0:56

After posting a thread in here, many people said that the sound is normal

So , what can i do to reduce the noise ?

is reducing with automatic acoustic management (AAM) okay ?

and if so , what program would you recommend ? and what are the side effects?

Hey yamazakk123,

It does sound a bit louder than a regular WD Green, but I believe if you put properly tightened screws and take @LoGiCalDrm's advice, that noise would somewhat reduce. I believe those noises come during heavier and more intense disk usage. This is probably just the head moving while seeking.

If you are worried about your data, I would advise you to download and run WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool. I would run both the quick and the extended tests in order to check the drive's S.M.A.R.T. status as well as for any bad sectors that might have appeared. Here's a link to that: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=0jQ4xQ

If the drive passes both tests, it should be safe to store your data and work properly. If the sound bothers you, I would go to the retailer and compare your drive with a new WD Green and see if there is a difference in the noise between the two and probably go for RMA in case there is.

Thanks LoGiCalDrm for the mention. I have a problem with my notifications whenever someone mentions me and I simply don't get any. In case something like this happens, feel free to PM me. :)

Get rubber mounts, that's all you can really do apart from having an all SSD setup

CPU: i5-4690k GPU: 280x Toxic PSU: Coolermaster V750 Motherboard: Z97X-SOC RAM: Ripjaws 1x8 1600mhz Case: Corsair 750D HDD: WD Blue 1TB

Sorry i'm new to this stuff

what is rubber mounts ?

my hdd case is like this

Rubber mounts at just what they sound like. Either o-rings or more specific things made out of rubber. You can find them by searching for noise reducing kits for HDDs. The cage you have there is only plastic and has really basic shock protection/reduction. I can highly recommend Scythe Stabilizer kit if you can find it. I have two of them, one for WD Black and another for Samsung 1Tb which would otherwise make huge rattling noise.

so if i cant find any rubber mounts,

i just have to live with having that noise all the time right ? i think i'm okay with that

but my main concern is still , is my hdd safe with that noise ?

i'm afraid that the hdd will fail

Yup, that is normal working noise for HDD. If it starts to click, screech really intensive or spin up and down all the times, its dying. I have completely working WD Blue 400Gb which makes about 3 times more noise than your  Green does. Another sign of HDD dying is when it takes for every to load folders and file browser starts to crash.

@LoGiCalDrm

I think my hdd makes a new sound

can you check this vid ? (note:  i enhanced the video sound , so you can hear it clearly)

when i close the PC case, it makes a thumping noise (but only when i access it , like for gaming , watch video , listen to music)

you can really hear it in 0:12 - 0:15

and this

 0:02 - 0:04 , 0:08 - 0:10 , 0:11 - 0:13

i want to ask also, if i dont return this WD to the retailer and i do a backup , and i dont put anything more on the hdd (i will just playing games using the hdd, no downloading) and then it failed, can i still return it to the retailer ? (the retailer did not give me the WD box)

and this is the tray for my hdd , (should i screw in 2 bolts in the middle on each side to make it steadier ? could that help ?) my case is CM haf 935 Stacker

@yamazakk123, you mean the short sound? Its also normal. It caused by some software reading or writing to drive. As for returning the drive, if you have proof of purchase (receip) you can return broken drive either straight to WD or to retailer. Usually drives have 1-3 years of warranty which will include all mechanical failures. You will most likely loose anything on drive when it fails.

Adding screws is ok but probably wont do that much to noise since it isn't humming or other resonance type thing.

(Captain_WD, could you check this to confirm that I'm correct.)

@LoGiCalDrm

yeah the double tapping sound "kirk kirk" noise almost like a heartbeat thump

http://youtu.be/gfiCu5l495M?t=12s  around the 12 seconds

http://youtu.be/PEU4Al8vIP0?t=11s around the 11 seconds

Ah , so the only downside if its failed is just losing all of my HDD data?

oh i do have the receipt, but it also the receipt for all of my other PC part , because i bought this in 1 package

Okay then i wont even bother putting the screw on there if it doesn't do much haha

i can live with the thumping noise

i'm just afraid that the hdd is defective , or harm other part of my PC because i can hear the thumping noise from outside the case

let @Captain_WD or any other user listen to my vid also

just to make 100% sure

but i thank you ! for your time and input ! :)

any other input from you would be great !

Rubber mounts and tight screws.

so you think that my WD noise is normal ? (not defective?)

if i dont put any rubber mounts or tight screws , will it harm the hdd or any other component ?

because it's like a little thumping noise that i can hear from outside the case
