Why can't I back up my SSD to my HDD

Matthew12106

I'm trying to backup my SSD onto my HDD but windows just tells me that you can't backup to a drive which the computer boots up from or windows is installed on.

But my HDD doesn't have windows on it. I made sure it wasn't even plugged in when installing windows. So why doesn't it work, please help???

If no one comes up with a solution, you can create a partition for the backup.

More information is need here......I don't see two hard drives there, i see one hard driver and what looks like a DVD disk drive. Another thing is that the windows message implies that you are trying to save a system image to the drive that windows is on or that already has windows on and not just a storage device

Hello, sorry about the lack of information. Hopefully this next screenshot makes up for it. I have 3 drives an ssd, hdd and disk drive. The ssd doesn't show up in that list you saw because I'm trying to back up the SSD. I can assure you I didn't install windows on my HDD trust me if I did it would be allot slower to boot

Do you have any linked user files on the hdd? Windows will consider any drive junction - linked or library- linked (my docs go to different drive for example) to be part of os drive and will also image that drive as well.

I tested that. I linked the folders to my 1TB drive and attempted to set my backup location on that drive. When selecting the drive, there was nothing preventing Windows from backing up to that location.

Yeah windows will image that drive as part of os backup Because it's linked. Your only options are to unlink all files, move those file back to the ssd, or do what I do (imo better option since I keep mine in the car) and get a portable hdd to backup to.

Edit: sorry lol wasn't watching who I was replying to. Wrangling my kid at a restaurant while typing is fun :)
