Brother's PC suggestion

Go to solution Solved by SuperPug,

My question is, what i5 should he get for non-OC purpose? I'm more toward intel so that he can use micro or mini itx motherboard (non of those for amd here),  he's in the college and it's going to be a pain in the butt to bring full sized computer every time he comes home.

Get an i5 4460 and a cheap H97 or Z97 (for example AsRock Z97 Pro 4). Its gonna perform better than the FX with the GTX 970.

My brother is finally a part of masterrace! I already pick the components and still haven't decide whether to use amd or intel for the proc since the budget is kinda tight about ($1200). He doesn't do much overclock and I kinda don't understand intel processors other than the K series.

AMD build

Proc:  FX-8320 ($190)

Mobo: MSI 970A-G43($100)

RAM: Corsair vengeance 8gb ($90)

HDD: Seagate 1gb ($70)

GPU:  GTX 970 ($430)

PSU:  Corsair CX 600w ($93)

Case: NZXT Source 210 ($57)

OS: Windows 8.1 ($100) (he probably won't buy it  )

Total: $1130

If I was to build a system like what your brother needs, this would probably be it, it comes to just under $1140 without Keyboard, Mouse or Monitor, and is small enough without compromising on anything except overclocking, which you say your brother doesn't do.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/gqKxNG

It has these parts.

Core i5 4460
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo (Your brother will not need much more than this because he won't be overclocking)
Asus H97I Plus
Avexir 8GB (2x4GB) 1600MHz RAM (Avexir are quality stuff, but you can swap it out if you prefer)
Crucial MX100 256GB (For the money there's nothing else to touch this drive)
WD Caviar Green 1TB (For mass storage and games and don't be fooled, they're more than fast enough for that)
EVGA GTX970 ACX2.0
BitFenix Prodigy Black (This is a personal preference thing, if you can think of a smaller case that supports these parts then go for it, but it's tough and well made, and easily supports everything your brother is likely to have)
Corsair RM650W PSU (Overkill, but it's better to overspend on a quality PSU than skimp on quality and have it all blow up in your face, especially if your brother is using it for college)
Windows 8.1 64bit

CPU: Core i5 2500K @ 4.5GHz | MB: Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3P | RAM: 16GB Kingston HyperX @ 1866MHz | GPU: XFX DD R9 390 | Case: Fractal Design Define S | Storage: 500GB Samsung 850 EVO + WD Caviar Blue 500GB | PSU: Corsair RM650x | Soundcard: Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Titanium

Gosh darnit, I forgot to mention that I can't use pcpartpicker due to my location. The price is just way too far from there.

The ones you mentioned are actually pricy and out of budget (e.g evga gtx970 is $580 here). But I think I might add hyper 212 and use 4460 to his build.

Holy cow, where are you based for it to be that much?

If that's the case then try seeing how much a R9 280X is or a R9 290 is, if you can't afford one of those then take a look on ebay for a HD7950 from a reputable seller, you can pick one up for dirt cheap usually and they're not that much slower than a R9 280 (In fact, they're almost exactly the same GPU if I recall correctly)

This is kinda why we could do with knowing what country you're based in, that way we can look into what parts make the most sense for you, but if you can't do that for whatever reason, then that's fine, it just makes our lives and yours, much easier :)
