Should I wait for the Surface Pro 4?

joppetie

Hey guys and gals,

I've been doing some research for laptops and convertibles, as I will need one when I go to university next year.

Currently, my favourite by far is the Microsoft Surface Pro 3. I really like the detachable keyboard, the weight and the gorgeous screen.

I also already have decided to wait for reviews and definitive pricing (in The Netherlands) of the new Dell XPS13 to come in.

But hearing what Intel's new Broadwell is doing for the mobile market, I don't know if I should maybe wait for the Surface Pro 4 to be released,

as it might bring the best of both worlds. (design, usability from SP3, and battery life from XPS13)

What do you guys think?

Broadwell looks amazing, so I'd definitely wait and see what happens. If nothing else, the price for the SP3 should go down. :)

Cheers,

Linus

If you look at Wendells review of the Surface 3, it's pretty awesome and in depth.

Personally.. I really don't understand tablets, even powerful ones such as the SP3.  I personally would wait for the XPS13, obviously look for reviews of that as well, but I am really enamored by that concept.

I'm not sure what the rumors are on SP4, but I'd wait and see, the new broadwell chips are insanely low on power.

Yeah, I see what you mean, but I'm already pretty much happy with the performance (and all of the other features) of the Surface Pro 3.

I'm hoping to see better battery life out of the 4th iteration. Then it will be pretty much perfect.

Apparently Microsoft is showing off Windows 10 in two days,

and word on the street is that SP4 will come pre-loaded with it.

I think I'll wait and see for now.

Thanks for the advice, any way! :)

I'm waiting on the pro 4 myself. The surface pro 3 has pretty much the perfect design, but with windows 10 and broadwell that shouldn't thermal throttle in the same form I think the surface pro 4 will be a winner. BTW, the surface pro 3 thermal throttles REALLY bad if you try gaming with it.

I know, but I wasn't really planning on playing games on it other than some 2D time wasters (Hammerwatch, Hearthstone, etc.)

Other than that, it's mostly for word processing and web browsing. But I do agree, waiting for the Pro 4 is probably my best bet.

Here's to hoping it doesn't take too long..

This.  I'm waiting for Windows 10 and Broadwell/Skylake to be available in one package before even considering a tablet.  I've found the 10 release preview to be quite pleasant in comparison to 8/8.1 and the improved battery life/processor efficiency should be excellent.  Also full desktop Windows is a must for me - I really don't like mobile versions of programs or web browsers and webpage support for them.  Hopefully the Surface 4 fits the bill.

I agree. Maybe you can get something similar in the XPS13 sooner, but I feel that the touch experience is simply better (not as awkward) on a tablet-like device, unlike a laptop.

On a laptop you have to reach over the keyboard to interact with the screen, which just isn't a very good experience.

I would get the new lenovo convertible, the LaVie Z HZ750; it looks amazing.

It seems comparable to the Dell XPS13. But it won't be available here in The Netherlands any time soon.

Yes, it is. Most devices are, actually. But the article I read specifically said that the LaVie Z HZ750 will only be available in Japan and the USA for a while.

Currently have 2 SP3, will be a while before I upgrade from them. Awesome device for university.

If you don't need it now I would say wait for the SP4.
