Performance issues in games

Go to solution Solved by DebatED Nothing,

Well, I fixed it a while ago so I thought I might as well post an update saying what (I think) fixed it: I bought a Hyper 212 EVO. Now I have my CPU overclocked to 4.4, and it never goes above 50C. Not had these types of issues since.

First time posting here, this community came recommended by a friend to try and get some help for an issue I'm experiencing at the moment. The long and short of the situation is that generally, the games I play run fine, but for a reason I can't identify, they occasionally, and as is the way of the world, at the worst possible time, crap out and drop from 60-120 fps depending on game down to 3-8 fps. I've tried looking at my CPU cores and RAM whilst playing but they don't seem to be the issue, so I'm stumped.

My PC specs are:

AMD (Piledriver) FX-8350 4.00GHz Socket AM3+ 8-Core Processor

GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-D3 AMD 990FX (Socket AM3+) ATX Motherboard

EVGA GTX 770 graphics card

8GB (2x4GB) Corsair Vengeance Jet Black 1600MHz CL9 DDR3 RAM

750W Corsair HX Series V2 80PLUS Gold Modular Power Supply

Corsair Force GT 60GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive

And a 1TB WD HDD salvaged from a dead Apple time machine.

(64bit win7)

Any idea what could be the bottleneck (provided that's the issue)?  I tend to run games with nothing but them and maybe winamp running, so it's not because of another program.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Ed

Hey Ed, first of all welcome. Be sure to follow your topics so you are notified if posts on it.

Anyways, it might be an obvious question, but have you updated all your drivers? (Mostly GPU).

Another question, what games is this in?

Also, what settings are you running it on? Particle settings mostly

The main games I notice it in are DOTA 2 and Insurgency. I run both at max basically. I did just download a CPU temp monitoring program and my CPU's running quite hot all the time, could that be an issue?

Yeah, you need to qoute. Anyways, are the games installed on your SSD or HDD? And I guess Windows is installed on your SSD?

All games on HDD, as SSD is only 60gb so is pretty much full. I'm buying a new SSD at some point.

I've still not figured it out, though I think it may have something to do with this...

teaH0Qp.png

my cpu temp whilst playing. Drop at the end is because the game crashed while I tried to tab out (common problem, not exclusive to my pc)

I think you need to re-install GPU drivers, as this was also an issue for me. I recommend doing this from the disc drivers that came with your GPU and then update them, because getting them from the website could result in lack of drivers or softwares required for your GPU as the drivers are individual and you will get confused. So yeah...Re-install them. If it doesn't work then let me know

Edit: first remove them from Start>Control Panel> Programs and Features> Nvidia Graphics drivers.(And any nvidia related stuff

Its allowed only when your post gets older than 2-3 days. This is international forum so you should allow 24h for replys.

Anyway to problem. Could you find out what exact model that HDD is? Something like 5400rpm drive could cause random fps drops when some background program access it while you are gaming. Also you should check out pagefile and move it to HDD. And do defragging also. You should clean dust from case and maybe consider aftermarket cooler.

Fragmentation is not the problem, it defrags weekly.

Thermal throttling coupled with the fact that cpu lacks the STR performance dota so desperately needs.

Have you tried checking your network while gaming?
