yea the second slot is only X4 PCI-E 2.0

290X uses the PCI-E bus for data transfer

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

u only need 4x right? for amd crossfire. for nvidea its 8x for every card.

but still recommend that u upgrade your mobo to a z87 board if you have the money.

It'd be advisable to upgrade to a Z97 mobo to get the full Xfire/SLI experience and support.

But i wont be overclocking my CPU and it is kinda a waste to replace my mobo....

What is the cheapest option without bottlenecks for me then?

prepare for a 20% drop in fps difference against the system using full SLi ready board

The ASUS Z97-A is a great board the supports Xfire and SLI

I guess i'll just stick to a single 290x at 1440p freesync 144hz then... D:

Well until skylake releases that is :P

Actually what would be your opinions? What should i do? (i have not gotten the monitor yet and i plan on doing so)

Should i just use my GPU until it dies and get a new one

Or should i get a newer card when it comes out? (that is if my card becomes obsolete )

Ehhh... it'll still be much lower than a overclocked 4690K. Don't know where people get this idea that Haswell is somehow all-powerful.

bf4_amd.png

Even with one 290x, that's a 21.7% performance hit between a 4460 and a 4.5ghz 4690K (mantle). With two cards, the hit will be even higher.

civbe_amd.png

Mantle results, one 290X, 4460 vs 4.5ghz 4690K it's a 32.7% performance hit.

fc4.png

Mantle results, one 290X, 4460 vs 4.5ghz 4690K it's a 26% performance hit.

Don't want to poop on your parade, and you'll still get great performance. But that statement is a flatout lie. Yes, i realize it's in 1440p, but this is with one card so that "narrows" it down. The difference for your system will be even worse than this scenario, because 1440p is less of a performance hit than the performance you gain with two cards.

Who told you it was a good idea?

hey bro...you link benchmarks at 1080p...1440p is much harder on the GPU'(s) and he is much more likely to be limited by the performance of his GPU solution at such a resolution than by anything else...his CPU is perfectly fine for dual high end cards at 1440p...more than enough!

Remember 1440p is 77% more pixels for the GPU to render than 1080p...it's a major hit.

for 1440p gaming i do recommend dual high-end cards...a single 290X can't max out most modern games at such a resolution unless you don't mind playing at 30-45FPS or if you are okay with running medium/highish settings for 60FPS.

I really don't recommend running dual 290X at 4X speed obviously so youd need a better motherboard and a top of the line 800W PSU minimum and good air flow in your case and also a good air conditioning unit to cool your room in the summer.

Hmmm i am actually planning to just suck it up and play at max settings at 30-45 fps (im getting freesync) and getting a higher end single GPU when the time comes (Probably when the 400 series comes out)

sounds like a plan if you don't mind lower framerates then it's fine...290X is still a good card for 1440p...just not optimal IMHO.

GTX980 wouldnt be that much better so...yeah...and at 1440p the 290X is slightly better than the 970 so it's a good choice.

Read what I wrote, do not skim over a post and start hammering away at the keyboard. I said "i know it's 1080p" but the OP has 2x290x, so eventhough the resolution is 77% higher he is running crossfire. So that makes it ok again. If he was running 1440p on a single card, that would've made my benchmarks moot.
