What device would you recommend that fits these specs?

Hey guys, my school is pretty much requiring us now to bring in our own devices, since the laptops are probably 5-6 years old. and they have given us some guidelines for said devices. http://imgur.com/zG4SuUO here they are. now what devices would you recommend to fit these specs? preferably something cheap (around $300-400 AUD)

frankly our IT guys suck balls at anything except admin stuff. im 99% sure i know more than they do. but the software our school uses is a screen watching software which i bet wont work on linux. and all our schools documents are cloud based.

well school it sucks,i was suspended for 3 days for only bypassing my school firewall and hosting a counterstrike game on the server,took them a ,month to figure out who did it.............. why do they need screen watchers in the first place ???

i dont know since there are so many restrictions on what we can get into anyway. we can only get into IE Chrome and whatever shortcuts are pre placed on the desktop. no control panel access whatsoever. they just dont want us playing games pretty much

well we cant get onto any games websites anyway since its all government regulated. but games can be run off usbs which is handy.

Got through the schools sucky firewall protection and downloaded minecraft onto every compiter. Lol and my library teacher couldn't work it out so the school is still try even though I left last year.

the teachers dont know i know a fairly large amount about tech. i am always asked to turn on projectors though since all of the receivers on them are broken so the remotes dont work and im 6 foot 4.

Fair enough, in fact you seem to have a very similar one that my sister has, good laptop, except for screen, and build quality.

i like the screen on this. the all plastic build is kindof annoying. the screen is kind of flimsy as well.

The one on my sisters is really shitty, aweful tn panel, unless you are viewing it directly, you can't see jack shit.

the panel on mine must not be tn then because the viewing angles are pretty good. i literally cant tell the difference anymore because ive used so many different monitors.

ok then, I see yours has a 750gb HDD, my sisters has a 1tb, there must be a few diferences

mhmm. 750gb is no where big enough for all my games. i can spot high res and high fps monitors so easily.

That IT staff seems to be bad indeed.

My school had Terminals from Sun. Mind you that was back in the age of CRT displays and mice with a ball (well it was 2003 to be exact). They ran linux. But they had tetris with multiplayer preinstalled so that was alright. We were connected to the internet via some city-server which we connected to over the traffic-light network. We had a very aggressive filter installed that even blocked a search for "Joe Cocker" (granted, a dick joke), but blocking stuff like Statoil was just silly (don't ask me why I searched for the norwegian state oil company).

 

Based on the specs I would get some sort of lenovo thinkpad (there are professional resellers that sell them with warranty). And then get the 70Wh battery. 6hrs of battery life minimum, Jesus that are high hurdles. The older 14 inch lenovos come with a matte display. They are not the very last word in terms of perfomance but they are perfect for work. Two roommates of mine got used thinkpads and have not complained since.

In my school days I and a bunch of fellow techies WERE the schools IT guys, and audio guys too (behringer x32 that was kinda sweet)

It runs now a server end network infrastructure youd expect from a mid-range positioned company

with server room dual 12.core xeon servers and all this beautiful stuff

 

to OP did i get this right?:

Your school tells xou to buy your own notebook (or netbook or ultrabook whatever beautiful marketing names it is branded) and then they want to install software on it to whatch what youre doing?

Are they going to be able to remote control your device

 

anyway id recommend to go with an ssd or sshd no matter what because waiting for aour harddrive sucks exspecially on notebooks
