Hi,

So I'm currently in junior year in high school and I want to have a super slim m-ATX case so I can bring my current system to college in ~2 years, if I choose to bring my current system or unless Intel innovates so rapidly in their mobile CPUs that it performs nearly as well as the desktop CPUs counterpart.

The reason for a slim m-ATX case is so that I can fit it in a suitcase lol

The ones I have looked at so far are these:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?N=100007583%20600006308&IsNodeId=1&Submit=ENE

Though, I am curious if anyone knows some other super slim cases.

[Yes, I know, m-ATX cases can only be so slim to accommodate 4 pcie and a m-ATX mobo]

[Yes, 2 years is a long time away, though I don't think many case manufacturers are going to release any slimmer cases in the next 2 years, so I might as well look a bit into it now]

Thanks

This is ITX, but it's what I'd get if I were to build an ITX system: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811163252&cm_re=raven_case-_-11-163-252-_-Product

Yeah, I also looked into that case as well; rewatched Linus's review on it :P

But X99 is only on m-ATX or larger, and I just don't see how they would make an m-ITX version :(

If you feel up to it, you can make a suitcase rig.

or you can buy this lian-li itx case that's got a handle. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112348

Not up for making my own case

Ehh, I like a lot of Lian Li's case for their material and aesthetics, but not that one lol

The case is also m-ITX

Saw that video, it's larger than the ones in the Newegg link I posted, or at least it looks larger...

EDIT: also, that case, the RV one, that one is m-ITX

Do you already have the m-ATX EVGA board? If so, what're your thoughts on it? I may be downsizing from my Rampage to that board.

Look at my signature; I have the EVGA m-ATX mobo for X99.

The reason why I bought it was because there were only three m-ATX options at the time of purchase (around black Friday season) and it was the only one that fit my build's color scheme

The three were Asrock (Blue), Asus(or maybe something else, but it was red) and EVGA (black)

The mobo is alright for me. I'm not really a power user or aggressive overclocker so... yeah...

It has all the ports/connections I need, so it works for me (only 2 storage devices).

Why do you want to fit it into a suitcase?

and why not itx?

So I can bring it to college. Or are there other methods? I don't really want to ship because: lost in transit, damage during transit, etc.

There are no X99 mobo, and I don't see one becoming a reality due to the large CPU socket and is a bit counter intuitive.

Lian li o series

Nope, still larger (or actually wider) than the cases I linked in my original post from Newegg. The cases do look pretty nice though

Do you need full PCI slots?

uhh, not sure if I am understanding this correctly, but enough PCIe slots (2) for a Gigabyte 970

I've been looking for the smallest mATX for awhile as well, and honestly I don't think it gets much smaller than this if you want to have a full length graphics card. The Silverstone SG04B-F is an old model (not even on their website anymore), but it really is about as small as you can get for mATX and still have a high end graphics card. They have another even smaller (shallower) one, but you won't be able to get a large graphics card in it. I've been thinking about getting this case before it completely disappears, but it's pricey, and you'll have to go with a low profile CPU cooler, so I'm still not sure if I'll be going for it or waiting for something better in the future.

SNIP

I would not recommend going any smaller than the SilverStone SG09:

If you want slim I think you need to go with an HTPC like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811163205

Left: full height PCI

Right: Half Height PCI (Low profile)

But nvm... All 970s are full height... I'll take a look

EDIT: Suitcase dimensions?

Hmm, wow, didn't even think about the low profile and full size PCIe slots. I just assumed all cases are full size and the low profile ones are 'extinct' or nearly 'extinct'

Honestly don't know which suitcase, since I'm not packing or anything yet. I still got two more years until college and just want to start looking a bit into this, I guess.

This made me readjust all the case options.

If you have two years to do this, then definitely wait on the planning stage. With efficiency going up rapidly in gpus, there will be more half height options in the future, meaning more good small cases, and therefore making your current choice almost certainly not the best one for the future.

Woo!

Ehh, Linus (or Slick) made a sort of big deal how the push pin (?) system wasn't that great and the whole front panel is glossy. ewww...

Yeah, I already looked at this case. But it does look really good, as long there's no fingerprints on it or anything :P

Holy cow, what a project!

How long is the whole planning/designing and whatnot process? Like, how much time have you spent on this project so far?

I have read to the fourth page and didn't see an answer lol

Ha, thanks  :D

I started in April, got the prototype a few weeks ago. There's several months of down time in that period though where I got burned out on the project and was waiting for new product launches (600W SFX, Haswell-E, Nvidia 900 series), I wasn't working on it the whole time.

Probably have several hundred hours in it, I always forget to keep track when embarking on big projects like this so I'm not real sure on that point.
