Unlike the intel's future topic which can be found here: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/287927-intels-future/

AMD is another story, it went from being better and competing with intel to being a shadow and not even competition to intel in less than 10 years (going from the Phenom series from 2006)

AMD as of late is pretty much only focusing on their APUs which IMO are superior to intel's offerings, having much stronger onboard gfx compared to intel which is a +.

But AMD really should revisit the desktop again and focus on true desktop processors and really need to shoot for being "as good" as intel's mainstream offerings and even doing an enthusiast line would be awesome!

For starters AM3+ needs to go as it's getting old, new socket please! Supporting PCI-E Gen 3 would also be a plus, granted we're NOT maxing bandwidth at Gen2 16x let alone Gen3 16x but having Gen3 would be a welcome addition.

I'd also like to see AMD using true cores not using a split core setup being 4 normal cores but they're using split core or faco cores in their 8-core processors.

I haven't really gone team red for awhile and even back when the athlon64 was released I was using intel (I did have an athlon64 setup for gaming though) but true 64 apps weren't their and heck games are just now jumping to 64-bit "yay to the death of XP! MS just kill 32-bit already!" And even when the Phenom 6-core was released it felt like a step in the right direction but since then AMD has been falling behind Intel and granted AMD generally has 1st like 1ghz, reaching 5ghz, and probably 6ghz before intel, but recent CPUs are never as fast or even as strong as an i5...

AMD really needs to think it's desktop strategy or simply kill the desktop line and only focus on their APUs.

Pretty much everything you said they are already doing but they cant make a new CPU that will catch up with intel in terms of ipc over night it will probably be 2016 before amd release a proper high end  cpu again.

I've known about Zen but they've set large expectations with their 8-core cpu a few years ago and that bombed!

I definitely will check out Zen when it actually does get released, they haven't talked yet about a new socket which indicates it'll still be using AM3+

It would surely be nice to see AMD back into the CPU competetive scene for good. I currently have an AMD cpu in my rig (Phenom II x4 955 3.2Ghz) and I have been pleased with it, and it was pretty cheap as well, as far as i recall.

It would also help us the users, if there was actually two competetive manufactors, and not like now, where AMD are cheap and ok performance, and Intel are ''expensive'' and has super performance.

I want AMD back in the high performance market, but not because I want an AMD processor. I want them in the game for the betterment of both Intel and AMD, which I'll still pick based on reasons more than just raw performance (or core count)

Given AM3+ would be a 5 year old socket and a 8 year old platform design at Zens release I think you'd be safely assured "Zen" will be on a new socket + platform

Hopefully! If it is on the AM3 socket again, it is going to be a huge disappointment. It would be nice if AMD at least matched the performance of a 4770K and kept the price as is. That will be enough of an incentive for many people who are just jumping on to the PC platform to decide for AMD instead of Intel.

it is a brand new architecture so probably will have a new socket. but it might have an AM3+ socket, but uses completely different motherboard, look at 2011 v2/v3, but highly unlikely

Now Jim Keller, the designer of the best AMD CPUs, and the best mobie (Apple AX CPUs) came back and design this CPU/platform from ground up. They have the possibility for a comeback

How is this different from Intel's hyperthreading? And why does it matter so much? They show up as logical cores to the OS and work just fine.

You mean the FX-8xxx and 9xxx series? How did they bomb? The 8xxx seems just fine to me.

i remember years ago when the athlon first came out it was serious competition for intel...in fact if i remember correctly it even beat what intel had at the time but amd has already said they are no longer trying to compete with intel they are mostly focusing on apus and thier gpus. which is great because i like thier gpus and used nothing but amd gpus ever since my old 8800gt

cpu:i7-4770k    gpu: msi reference r9 290x  liquid cooled with h55 and hg10 a1     motherboard:z97x gaming 5   ram:gskill sniper 8 gb
