MS Office On Ubuntu?

Tocsin_786

so i just put linux on my laptop and came to the conclusion about how much libre office sucks. i hate going up to the menu bar for doing stuff because it reminds me of a mac i would not hate it if my laptop had a touch screen. so i know you can get windows applications onto linux using a program called wine. but i dont know how to use wine. is there a way to get office for linux?

Space Journal #1: So Apparently i  was dropped on the moon like i'm a mars rover, in a matter of hours i have found the transformers on the dark side of the moon. Turns out its not that dark since dem robots are filled with lights, i waved hi to the Russians on the space station, turns out all those stories about space finding humans instead of the other way around is true(soviet Russia joke). They threw me some Heineken beer and I've been sitting staring at the people of this forum and earth since.

thats not what i meant. ive used a mac for 7 years before it will happen again. i hated that bar on the mac and now its on linux i hate on there too. i said it reminds me of a mac cuz it really reminds me of one. i hate opening drop down menus on a laptop because of the track pad. none of these problems would be posted if i were on my PC.

It sounds like you're referring to GNOME's interface, not LibreOffice. Are you using GNOME?

I'd take take if I were you. MS Office has that awful ribbon interface. It's ok enough for a desktop, but on a laptop it occupies the top third third of the entire screen. Sure you can turn it off. Turn off the entire interface to make room for your document...

LibreOffice's interface, last I looked at it, just mimicked the Office 2003 look.

Only thing I can think of is office online. For me, my school pays for it so I get it for free. I get Office anywhere that has internet.

OpenOffice or Libre Office should be more than adequate as they both read MS office extensions.

You can run office on Wine, Wine is an adapter that allows windows programs to run on Linux.

I really hate those bars too. They're just obnoxious. IIRC, openoffice adopted them too. Libreoffice didn't at least.

If you have to work with someone that has MS Office, not having MS Office is a pain.

The level of irony in that statement is astounding

You should try linux mint, maybe you'll like it better than ubuntu. As for the MS Office Question... I guess open office and libre office will have to do :/ They're alright but have somme compatibility issues with ms office. Most of the time they work just fine tough.

Edit: Or you can use wine. I haven't tried that yet but it should work.

You can with Wine. I've done it, you just have to be prepared for lots of research and headaches as with a lot of things with wine.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Try Kingsoft Office

It's not free-as-in-freedom, but it is freeware and I've found it to be considerably better than Open/Libre Office.

The ribbon is awful for word which is what most people use that only needs a handful of things on the tools bar. If you use Excel however it's sorta ok if you need those though most excel users use mostly shortcuts instead. On Access is really useful vs the old versions as well it just has a lot more options by being tabbed.

I don't mind the ribbon necessarily, I hate the way it just doesn't scale with low resolutions. On my desktop I don't have an issue with it beyond having to relearn where everything is and some of the placements are quite counter-intuitive now, but on my work laptop it takes up like an inch and a half of the screen and I'm supposed to get around this by removing the interface entirely and toggling it on and of as and when I need to actually do something, which makes everything take a lot longer than it ought to.

Case in point, look at the Office Online screen shots above. Look at what proportion of that entire image is just interface. If that is your entire screen, how much space is just for toolbars? Does the "format number" icon really need to be an inch and a half tall? Isn't the actual document the most important part of this whole thing? The whole interface needs to be redesigned to refocus on maximising the usable work area, while displaying as many of the commonly used tools as possible.

Microsoft word uses an interface designed back when 4:3 monitors were ubiquitous. These days unless you're writing your document landscape, two thirds of your space is wasted. This is true whatever resolution you're working at. Why are the toolbars not vertical by default?
