Do i really need a graphics card? Help

Go to solution Solved by Faceman,

it will be in the future but for now i don't really have time cause of coursework and tests.. ergh

In that case, buy just the i5.

Then, when you get enough money, buy an R9 290 or GTX 970.  I think you will be much happier with this as the end result.  It will also allow you to spend more money on a better CPU and motherboard for overclocking.

im designing a new build and my graphics card is taking up £140 of my budget (r9 280x). since the intel i5 4460 has onboard graphics, do i really need a graphics card at the time of when i build it because i can always save up and buy one later, or should i get this card and get spend less on other parts probably meaning that they will be worse

the part list is:

http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/nBMqVn

I'm trying to aim between £400-£500

Thanks - Harry :)

Do you need an operating system included in your 500 pound budget?

What is the purpose of your machine?  Gaming?

If you're trying to play graphically demanding games, then a dedicated GPU is a necessity. If you're playing lightweight simpler games or not gaming at all, then there's not really any reason to include a GPU.

I'd run the onboard graphics while you wait for a better card.

Or just save up until you have the money that you require.

It all depends on what games you want to play.

If you're trying to play graphically demanding games, then a dedicated GPU is a necessity. If you're playing lightweight simpler games or not gaming at all, then there's not really any reason to include a GPU.

You don't have to play games that are thaaaat simple. I manage to play most games on my ultrabook and it only has HD4000 graphics.

If anything drop the SSD, yes if you wnat to play games a GPU is needed. Also THeres not a case included in that?

if i use a hybrid drive, could that be better than having two separate drives? and look at the very bottom (powermac g5) it costs £1 from eBay cause its so old and no one wants it cause the technology in it is terrible so i was going to strip it, convert it into an atx case then build in it

and if anyone is wondering why the price for the processor and GPU is a lot lower than what is on amazon, its because I'm getting the cpu as oem (original equipment manufacturer) so its cheaper but doesn't have a heatsink - these are normally used by companies who build computers so they would need lots of them but you can just buy 1. and the GPU is cheaper because of eBay, I've seen multiple 280x's go for around that price

It would be an option, then, to not bother with Windows until you actually want to game. Ubuntu will get you through your coursework unless you have any particularly Windows-specific software you need for it, and then you can just upgrade your OS and your GPU at a later time when you actually need them.
