I used to have a Jailbreaked PS3, then i decided to convert to pure PS3, The External Hard Drive which contained all my games was used for my private needs, Its a Seagate 500GB Expansion Portable External Hard Drive. Lately the drive is acting up, the speed has gone terribly down, the top fattens like a worn out battery, the top casing can pop out sooner or later, i mean like i can fit my nails in the loose top casing and skew it off. But i didnt.

Copying files to the drive is a HUGE PAIN, like movies. some are terribly corrupted that they wont play after a certain time in the movie, so i have to double check it by Unplugging it and Plugging it back then skip to the end of the movie to see if it works. Takes a couple of times...

The Problem is that it wont safely remove as said above, will safely removing a device affects the storage or after you copied the files you just unplug it? if you just unplug after completely copying the files then i'll consider my External Drive old. When i click 'Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media' and click on 'Eject Portable' it says that "Windows can't stop your 'Generic volume' device because a program is still using it. Close any programs that might be using the device, and then try again later." I know what you're thinking, Im probably still copying files to the drive and tries to "Safely Remove" it. I tried it with a clean Guest Account, No Startups or any programs whatsoever, Just AVG running in the background. AVG isnt scanning it btw. But it still doesnt work!

if you really want to be safe you can just shut down the PC and then unplug the drive. if you are sure that it doesn't copy anything or really does anything then you can just remove it. a lot of people just unplug their devices without doing the safely remove.

So... Safely removing the drive doesnt have anything to do with corrupted files? I mean copying movies to my hard drive can freeze at certain points

i'm not sure what you really mean. but if the copying of the file finishes then it should be fine. if you want to unplug the drive while it's copying because it freezes the i wouldn't recommend it.

Surely your parents or something can help if you explain your hard drive is broken and you need it for studies?

Hey Rashy,

Just a small note on Safe Removal of external drives.

This is highly recommended as Windows OS actually writes a little bit of data saying the drive was removed safely. It does that to indicate that all transfers to the drive have been finished and there is no pending data to be written and there are no reserved clusters for it. Unplugging the drive without safely ejecting it might end in corruption of the data inside and very often Windows asks to reformat the drive completely before using it if it detects that it was not ejected safely.

I would suggest getting the check tool from the manufacturer's website and checking the drive for errors and its S.M.A.R.T. status to make sure it is OK. If the drive happens to have a problem, I would suggest checking its warranty and replace it, as @ShadowCaptain suggested. :)

Captain_WD.

Its more than tomorrow... Long i know but SeaTools is a pain in the arse to use, i have to wait 30 mins just to get an error message that has no answers on google. I formatted my External HDD and tried to safely remove it. Nothing. Still Errors.

Conclusion:

  1. I am Fucked.
  2. Expensive
  3. The Ext. HDD is broken, it runs extremely hot, corrupts file even if i double checked it "oh ok" then a day later i plug it in its corrupted. DEAD.
  4. Back to small flashdrives.

Well, I guess it has indeed failed. I'm sorry to hear that. You can check with the manufacturer's support for any advice if you can do something else or go for a RMA procedure if the drive is still under warranty.
