I'm looking to build a PC (actually the value PC from the video a few days ago) and i'm unsure about whether it is recommended to get windows 8 or whether i should get windows 7, especially with windows 10 coming out fairly soon.

Get 8.1

Windows 10 won't be here that soon, it will probably be quite a few months, if not over a year. I prefer windows 8.1 to windows 7, there are no real advantages to windows 7 for me. You may want a classic start program though.

I use win 7. But plan on upgrading to win10 this spring (if it is good ;) )  several family members use 8.1. Even I'd suggest it, a lot more programs are supporting it now!

THIS IS MY SUPER TEENY TINY SIGNATURE!

Ain't it just the cutest little signature.

Some would argue it is the cutest little signature ever.

Why don't you use the Windows 10 preview? It's free so you can have more money for components. Once Windows 10 it's closer to release the preview will have to be replaced, you can purchase Win 10 then :P

If you don't want experimental software or be an early adopter, get windows 8.1, it's faster than Windows 7 and if you take your time to set the thing up properly (unlike most people) you can boot directly to the desktop and disable the modern interfaces altogether.

Also, I wouldn't suggest the value guide, many (including myself) don't agree with Linus component choices in that video. Read the comments of the video on this forum (not youtube), it had some fair input about making a better system.

Personally Windows 7 because I like it better but Windows 8.1/10 if you need every bit of performance you can get because they are a bit faster and lighter on the system. But maybe you can go 7 for now and 10 when it comes out.
