Hi guys, firstly i would like to say that i have never build a PC nor used a forum before, this is all new to me (noob here) so please advice if i did something wrong.

This post might be a little long, skip to paragraph 2 for things i need help with.

So i have been waiting to build a PC for a very long time now, about 2 years to be exact, I have waited so long mostly because when I wanted to build a PC i did not have much cash,.  and when finally i had cash..i found out Z97 and Devils Canyon was going to be out soon..... and when it was out.. i had spent the cash which i have saved to build a PC. About a 2 days ago i was thinking about building a PC again, as i was looking through my local PC shops Facebook page, a Motherboard caught my attention, the Asus SABERTOOTH MARK S. I was blown away, and i had to have it. It was listed at about $509 SGD  ($382.81 USD). which was WAY more then i intended to spend initially. So i did some research to justify the cost. There was nothing "special" about the board other then the 5 year warranty and the gorgeous looking white PCB. So i decide to go down to my local store and take a look at it any way. Took a look at the motherboard, still liked it.. so i was curious on how "limited edition" was the board, when i asked the salesmen that question, he told me Only 30 pieces are available for retail in singapore, and the store had two, one was already sold, and they only had one piece left, which i was holding in my hand. Being a sucker for limited edition and unique things, i took the plunge and bought the motherboard along with a 4690k which totaled up to $787 SGD ($593.40 USD)

Now i need help selecting other components of the PC, and legit advice on how to optimize my PC. I will be buying the Kingston 8gb Hyper X (x2 4GB) memory and NZXT H440 case in white, and i already have Corsair Force 60GB SSD.    I am planing to purchase a closed loop water-cooler and using ASUS software to overclock my CPU (need advice on that too). I am also slightly unclear about updating the bios and what updates should i look for. As for the GPU i wont be adding any, because i am not sure if i will still have the time to game, but that's for the future (3-5 months time). What OS should i go with Windows 7 or 8.1. And the power supply, what wattage would be enough (including single GPU). I also  need recommendation on a Free Anti-virus software. Lastly some tips and advice to keep in mind while building a PC. Thank you in advance.

Recap on things i need help with :

  • Windows 8.1 or 7
  • Power supply
  • asus AI Suite III overclocking
  • updating bios and other stuff
  • Anti-virus

Okey, lets start with the OS,

Many people still hate Win8.1, but I know a lot of People which like Win8.1, so if you are going to buy it better go with Win8 just because its newer and you don't have to think about upgrading that.

Power Supply, best thing for you would to go with a PSU between 500-650W, I am using the Corsair CX600M and could recommend that

I don't see the needs to update the BIOS,

For the GPU I can recommend the HOF Galax 970, fits you color scheme.

AntiVirus is kinda on your side, if you are using your brain while computing you should be ok with a passive one that you use from time to time.

Anymore questions? Just hit me up, but make sure to quote me so I see it.

^ This.

I completely agree on the whole PSU wattage. Also, I'm running a EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 650W power supply. Really high quality for the money. 80+ Gold, fully modular, and every single cable is sleeved and has no wire exposed.

And Galax's (Not used to them not being called Galaxy anymore) Hall of Fame 970 is really nice. Really white too. :D

I personally use MalwareBytes Premium, (Thanks @TheGamingBarrel for the key!) and a free version of AVG.

-snip-

For the OS, I'd say Windows 8.1. Is the most current OS, it'll be cheaper to upgrade to Windows 10 from, and if you really don't like the Metro UI you can use ClassicShell to get the start menu back. That's what I do, and it works great.

(Also that motherboard is be-a-u-ti-ful. I have an H440 in white/black, it's gonna look awesome in it!)

Thanks for your advice

firstly about the bios, linus always says you should check for bios update and update them if necessary. will i be fine if i don't do it ?

Then, the  HOF galax is very hard for me to find, i have already tired. but thanks.

thanks, cant wait to get my h440. since you have a h440 will a closed loop watercooler's radiator be able to reach the front of the case ? where the hard drive slots are ?

Does win 8.1 run games fine ?

thanks

Keep in mind, as long as you can get into recovery, you can unbrick it almost for sure

noted.

I mean its always good to start with the latest because you won't update your BIOS very frequently, I don't see the need for it most times but if you want to you should check the Motherboards Website because there are some different ways to perform such an update

Windows 8.1 has been running awesome for me with everything so far! Really the only difference between 7 and 8 that is noticeable is Metro, and that's easy to deal with. Performance wise, it's been great. I should note, however, that I haven't had any real experience with Windows 7 either, as I've been mainly a Mac user up until building this computer.

As for water cooling, I'm not really the right person to ask as I've never tried it. The NZXT site is down as I write this, but the Google snippet for the H440 mentions that the front and top are Kraken ready (the Kraken is NZXT's water cooler, or one of them) and can support up to 360mm radiators. Not sure if that helps you much.

BIOS is not the same as drivers, and he always tels us to update the drivers. Updating the BIOS used to be a little bit risky back in the day, so there's still people who say that you shouldn't update it unless you really need to, it is however very ssafe and easy to do in this day and age :)

Never Install the Drivers on the CD, always download the newest

If you don't have a separate computer to download drivers from, use the network driver from the disk and then to qoute Linus "Throw the disk away", the rest you just get from the web along with the updated network drivers for your board :)
