1440p or 4K

Go to solution Solved by GrimNeo,

1440p for sure, just returned a 4k monitor for one mine reason: you can't see anything unless you increase the Win dpi, so what's the point  you loss all the landscape so I'm going to wait for the 40'' Philips 4k from OC UK: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-022-PH&groupid=17&catid=1895

I think 4k is only worth it for 40'' & above otherwise you need to be an eagle to see anything

lol. I agree. Go with 1440p IPS

I have one gtx 970 G1 gaming for now and soon a second will be added to my system to push higher FPS and decrease my rendering time of my videos. I use Song Vegas to leverage the gpu power to render faster. I do game but i'm not that guy that demands 60 fps and nothing less. I jsut want a smooth gaming experience, so over 30 fps. And that more applies to 4K.  Anyways, currently on my main rig I have a small 24 inch 1080p monitor from Acer. I want to upgrade my monitor soon to a 27/28 inch monitor to increase screen real estate. But I do not know which one I should go towards, 1440p or 4K. I also do photography work on the side as well and would prefer an IPS panel for the better colour reproduction. My budget is something like 600-700(ish) euros, that's reasonable right? Anyways, I have looked around but only a little and it was at 4K. Thanks in advance.

4k imo :) but if you want 4k ips, you probably won't get 28".  In germany, the only 4k ips display that isn't 30hz is this one http://de.pcpartpicker.com/part/dell-monitor-up2414q and it's 24". Still not bad, but that's up to you.

How come and can you suggest some good IPS and somewhat pro monitors? Ones that can reproduce colours more accurately.

The difference between 1440p and 4k on a 27inch monitor isnt really noticeable in terms of visuals but the framerate will be sooo much worse on 4k.

Theres just no point - you'd just be wasting performance.

4k can be very interesting for video- and photoediting, cause you have so much more space to work with.
And as you said, you're not that interested in high refresh rates, it would definitly be worth the consideration.

One of the cheapest 4k monitors is the Dell P2715Q http://geizhals.de/dell-professional-p2715q-a1204381.html
But as you can see, it sill costs around 500€.
Another good 4k monitor could be this Acer http://geizhals.de/acer-professional-b276hkymjdpprz-um-hb6ee-009-a1179045.html

Here a list of pretty much any 1440p or 4k monitor: http://geizhals.de/?cat=monlcd19wide&xf=99_27~5137_11~5137_14~106_IPS#xf_top (I know it is in German, but at least you have a good overview)

Nahh never trust pcpartpicker Germany, it barely has anything when Germany actually has a lot. Take a quick glance at Amazon.de and/or Ebay.de Yes, I like Ebay and actually have had a better experience on ebay than amazon.

Thanks for those links :) And would you recommend the Dell? And I think I am just going to wait a couple more months at least, not enough IPS panels out in 4k for me to give 4k a fair chance against 1440p.

Depends which one is your priority.

1440p for gaming, 4K or 21:9 for everything else.

I really don't want to buy a 21:9 monitor. Just something I don't think I will like.

All depends on the size of the monitor, if it's under 30" don't bother with 4k, get a 1440p or 1080p monitor.

Personally 4K all the way!

I can't recommend the Dell, as I've never seen it yet. I guess it's a Dell, so it should have decent quality.

4K. It's superior in every way. Gaming is so beautiful. You can work on so many things on the screen at once, it's far more awesome for productivity than I ever expected it to be, and 1440p hasn't had a price drop to match 4K making 4K in a lot of situations actually cheaper.

If you're doing professional colour work and you need this as a business investment, get something like the Dell Professional P2715Q IPS (currently £575 on Amazon), otherwise get the Asus PB287Q TN (currently £370).

This is a question that I'd been having a lot of difficulty with since I got my GTX 980. Eventually I realised that to game at 4K at an acceptable framerate, not even two 980's would cut it. Given that 980's are pretty much the state of the art right now, I personally think that really smooth gaming at 4K is still a ways off (at least at a reasonable budget). I chose to go up to 1440p instead and am absolutely delighted with the decision.

Give it two or three years when the industry has caught up and I'll look into 4K. For now 1440p looks amazing when you're coming from 1080p.
