Alright, I have a i7 930, 2.8 GHz, with turbo speed of 3.1 GHz, and for Christmas my brother got me an R9 290x

How can i fix this bottleneck, Is overclocking on such an old cpu a good idea? or is it time for an upgrade?

I'm afraid to swear now because the overlords might hurt me.

Overclocking the cpu can help relieve the bottleneck.

I'm throwing my vote at the overclocking party as well.

Whoa whoa whoa there, no need to call it old. And overclocking it won't hurt it, and it will get rid of a lot of the bottle-necking.

I honestly love this cpu. I have had 3 gpu's with this one cpu.

So is there an easy way overclock it?

If what you are looking for is a guide to overclocking, I know of this one http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/rmp_i7_920_overclocking I know it says 920, but it will work on a 930 with no issue.

if you're on lga 1366 and if your motherboard happens to be a x58 a used x5650 off ebay for 70 bucks would be a nice upgrade for you

tomshardware has your CPU right on the borderline of Tier 2 and Tier 3 for gaming CPUs: i7-930 is Tier 3, i7-960 is Tier 2. So an overclock should put you solidly into Tier 2 where you probably wouldn't bottleneck that 290x except in really CPU bound games like Crysis 3 or Arma.
