Obviously the Xeon is the better of the two, but you have to decide if it's worth the extra $60. For me it was since it wasn't coming out of my GPU budget and since I wanted a little bit of future proofing: I figured the extra 4 virtual cores were a better bet for that than the extra 600MHz or so I could get from an i5-4690k vs an E3-1231v3 pinned at 3.8GHz turbo, the same way a 3.5GHz i3 with 4 virtual cores kills a 4.5 GHz Pentium G3258 with 2 cores and no extra virtual ones when it comes to gaming on a high end GPU.

To everybody that thinks a xeon is a dumb decision:

If he does not want to OC but he does want to render things, which benefits greatly from more threads, then an E3 Xeon is a perfect choice

RIG: I7-4790k @ 4.5GHz | MSI Z97S SLI Plus | 12GB Geil Dragon RAM 1333MHz | Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970 (1550MHz core/7800MHz memory) @ +18mV(Maxed out at 1650/7800 so far) | Corsair RM750 | Samsung 840 EVO 120GB, 1TB Seagate Barracuda | Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 (Closed) | Sound Blaster Z                                                                                                                        Getting: Noctua NH-D15 | Possible 250GB Samsung 850 Evo                                                                                        Need a console killer that actually shits on every console? Here you go (No MIR/Promo)

This is why you should not get an FX CPU for ANY scenario other than rendering on a budget http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/286142-fx-8350-r9-290-psu-requirements/?p=3892901 http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/266481-an-issue-with-people-bashing-the-fx-cpus/?p=3620861

I have asked this question earlier but I did some resaerch and the cpu is expensive here, as wel as the gpu

And I did not know this when I asked it earlier

Thats why I asked you earlier where you are buying your components.

Also, you need to tell them that your purpose for this rig is rendering and editing, with a side of gaming.

@Faa also lives in Belgium, so hopefully he has a better understanding of the pricing and availability in your area.

I did not know it would be 100 euros more expensive !!

But thanks for the tip

if the 1220 is cheaper grab that instead

The 1220 doesn't have hyperthreading.

The least expensive Xeon that has Hyperthreading is the E3-1230 V3

The Xeon your looking at was actually cheaper than my i5 4440 ($262 AUD). Go for it since you don't actually need the iGPU since your getting a graphics card (just like the old days of computers needing vga cards to display video).
