70D or 7D with Prices Going Down?

Guest

I've posted a few times on how I was asking for advice when I'm buying a new camera, and for awhile I was looking into the Canon 70D. Its features and video capabilities were a major upgrade from my T3.

But nowdays, with the 7D Mark II coming out, the prices for the original 7D have dropped quite significantly. Some going for $400-500 less than a 70D body.

I've done a lot of comparison between the features and quality, but it would be nice to have your feedback as well.

I'm currently equipped with a Canon T3 with  50mm f/1.8 & 18-155 IS II (18-135 STM on the way) and I'd like to primarily get into these areas specifically:

  • HDR photography
  • Astro (Night sky)
  • Long Exposure
  • Video work (not exactly sure what in that field, still finding new things)

The 70D does have its advantages, with In-Camera HDR, continuous autofocus in video mode, and the Vari-angle screen which is quite useful for video.

But at a price of over $1100 for the body alone, I'm not sure it's worth it. What do you guys think will be the better option for me?

Thanks :)

I can't really comment on the Canon camera's. But I picked a d5300 over the d71000 because of the articulating screen. It is a godsend for video work. And has allowed me to get some interesting angles I wouldn't have been a to get in both stills and video.

I would consider Nikon as well, but since I already have the lenses I thought I would stick to Canon. I'll note down your point though.

What lenses do you have since that will help determine what one you should buy. EF-S  mostly then go for 70D

70D hands down for video, 7D's video is decent, but no where near as good.

I would only recommend the 7D if you do a lot of wildlife shooting and you need a cheaper camera (because of the shutter speed and buffer size). That being said, it's not a bad camera by any means, but it's nearly five-six years old now.

I should have been clearer.  I wasn't suggesting you go Nikon.  Just sharing my experience making the choice of which camera to buy.

If you are going to be doing more video than stills work, I think the 70D would be a better choice.

Are you going to be doing video a lot? If so, go for the 70D. If you're more of a stills person I would recommend the 7D and some good glass (Canon 17-55 f2.8 or Canon 50mm f1.8/1.4 or Sigma 24-105, though 24 isn't really wide).
