that's just one of many softwares that allow you to emulate another operating system on your pc. there are other solutions too, like vmware player and virtual box. with those, you can not only use a windows operating system on top of your windows operating system (sounds weird ;) ), but also any other kind of OS, like linux, BSD, etc...

one thing to keep in mind is, that your computer has to be quite powerful, since it has to run multiple operating systems at the same time. besides that, some features of your real os can not be emulated within the virtual os and therefore some features (like full support of your graphics card) might not be available.

for normal customers, such software is usually just something to play around with :)

pretty sure virtual pc allows you to have multiple OS's running within an OS.

so say I have installation A of windows 7 on my machine as my primary installation.

I could have an ISO of windows 8,along with a genuine registration code, and run windows 8 within my installation of windows 7.

There are some limitations with this. It can only run, in the virtual machine, Windows XP SP3, Vista or Windows 7. It will not allow you to run WIndows 8 or another OS. Also, the PC itself, must support and have enabled within the BIOS, hardware virtualization.

You can install any Windows., Even Windows 95 just fine with Virtual PC. I have done it, you can see on Youtube others have done it. Not a problem. What you do loose is some abilities like copy/paste files between systems, and not have the mouse captured, but networking works just fine, and operates fine.

In Windows 8 you have a much more powerful 'Virtual PC', called Hyper-V. But you need the supported hardware to use it. Hyper-V was normally on server editions of Windows. Microsoft have improved setting it up, making it easier, and integrated with Windows 8 Pro. I have no used it, because my system is too old (Core i7 930)

I like VMware because it features a Unity mode, where the open programs from the virtual OS appear on the taskbar of your main OS, allowing very seamless integration.

Or you could turn on Hyper-V in windows features.

OS X here I come :P

Defiantly Possible. A little more stuffing around than installing Windows or Linux onto One.
