Whenever I try to boot my new computer that I built today, It has an error. I have the NZXT H440 case that has no room for a CD Drive. So I have to use a USB to install windows. I have all the windows files on the USB but when I plug it in and select it to boot first it says this, "Reboot and select proper boot deviceor insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key". If anyone has had this problem PLEASE let me know because I really want to get my computer up and running! And I followed all the steps in Linus's video on how to create a bootable USB. Nothing has worked at the moment. I also have tried to format my USB and I have used 2 different kinds of USBs.

Have you set your USB as your first boot drive?

Because, you may have Drive set as first boot drive.

So, how exactly did you create this bootable USB FD? Despite following a tutorial video it is possible to mess something up along the way. If you can detail how you created it exactly then we might be able to find out where you possibly went wrong.

Well when I don't go into the BIOS, I hit F12 to select the boot device, and it still does the same thing.

You haven't set-up Windows on the USB properly then.

You should still try putting the usb drive first in the boot priority. I've seen instances where the motherboard will still try to boot off of the hdd even if you choose something else in the pop-up menu via F12.

Thought I would rotate and crop that photo since we don't all sit at our computers with our heads tilted to the left. :lol:

@ryannuttall

Maybe I enjoy tilting my head a little like this =>

turkey

 Though really it is quite possible that the mobo doesn't support booting from a USB which is possible but I'm not too sure if that's the case here.

If you can make a bootable USB of Ubuntu on another computer then try booting into that if you can then okay well it's possible that you don't have the full version of Windows 8 but actually the upgrade version of W8 (m8).

You might get a saw neck after a short while with doing that. :D

Go though the steps you used to make your USB boot, Like where did you get your windows files from? I know you mentioned not having space in your case for a drive but do you have a CD/DVD of windows? if yes, what kind do you have?

Back when I made my build with h440 I attached a CD/DVD drive from my old Dell and left the case open until the windows install was done, then removed the CD drive and closed up. Do you have any other machines? You could just move the HDD to one of those to install windows or steal its CD drive for the install.

Edit: Could you also let us know what parts you're using? Like wcreek said it's possible your mobo is the bad guy here.

Lol thanks for the rotation haha

No worries!

You should save it and replace the current photo in your OP with that rotated one. ;)
