Recommend a Racing Game?

Go to solution Solved by flibberdipper,

GRID and Assetto Corsa get my vote.

Hello,

I'm looking for a racing game, that fits the criteria-

  • Not too arcade-ish, or too simulator-ish
  • Fairly recent w/ good graphics
  • Good variety of vehicles, locations.
  • Not 'The Crew'

Would be nice to have-

  • Multiplayer AND singleplayer
  • Customization
  • No 60FPS cap (144hz monitor user)
  • Mod-friendly
  • Steam.... 'nough said?

I have a console-style remote for my comp, so I should be fine with the controls.

I saw grid Auto-sport on sale on steam, is it a good buy?

"Normandy" i7 4790K - GTX 970 - Phantom 410 (Gun metal) - Z97 Extreme4 (asrock) - 128GB Crucial SSD - 1TB WD HDD - H60 Refurb. - 7 case fans | G710+ Keyboard, G230 Headset, Acer GN246HL Monitor.

Quick thoughts on system: I7 is extremely quick and I'm glad I spent the extra for hyper-threading. I regret my decision to get the GTX 970, it has horrible coil whine. There isn't any excuse for this terrible whine I and others are having. I HIGHLY recommend a 144hz monitor. Future Improvements/upgrades: Rubber fan mounts, basic speakers, more ram (for a total of 16gb), replace GPU.

144hz is love. 144hz is life. I like to submit unfinished posts then do about 20 edits. I like the Night Theme too.

Assetto Corsa, it's amazing, it's difficult somewhat but really satisfying when you perfect a corner. It's got lots and lots of options in terms of graphics and looks beautiful.

Any chance that Asseto Corsa will drop more in price during the steam sale? Suppose all I can do is wait... Thanks  all.

Also, is AC actually a Sim? Or can someone who wants a nice mix of realism in arcade get into it fairly quickly?

Assetto Corsa was already a daily deal. Your next shot at it should be on the 2nd of january when Steam revisits their past deals.

The game has different presets of difficulties. So it should fit for what you are looking. Cars and track variety though has to be added manually via modding. The selection isn"t huge. But it's simple to find .

MSI X99S SLI PLUS  // Intel Core i7-5960X Processor (8 x 3.0 GHz) // Corsair Hydro Series H80i Cooling // 32 GB DDR4 High End Crucial 2133 MHz RAM

lack of racing games on PC is actually why I got an xbone. I like the forza series a lot and there's just nothing like it on PC. Especially the open world forza horizon games.

maybe project cars will change that but apart from the codies games (which are all great) there's not much I enjoy on PC in terms of racers

If you want a fun single player "driving" game which isn't so much a racer, Driver San Francisco is a really fun game

Grid Autosport and NFS: Shift 2. Both not really mod able and Shift 2 got some input lag that drive me crazy but still, it's a good game to use with a gamepad.

I highly recommend Assetto Corsa, it's more of a complete sim than a simcade but you can start with assist turn on and hopefully one day you'll get hook to it and buy a nice wheel in the future. It's also highly mod able.
