980 or wait for the 980ti

Mathis is a tough choice because I do want to have a single card so I'm thinking I might get a 290x and then put 200 dollars down to save up for a 980ti possibly

How about this, get a 970 or a 290 (non x, because it's a lot cheaper and is still fine for 1080p), and whenever you upgrade your monitor, get the next big card. Right now there isn't a single consumer GPU that can max out 4k.

So Im selling some junk on eBay and I will soon have about 630 bucks to spend on a new card instead of dealing with this Sli crap. So my question is what do yall think of the 980 ti coming out? What do you think the price range will be on it? Finally, do you think I should just get say a 980 superclocked or wait for the ti and save up for it.

I expect that the 980ti will cost ~$750 when it comes out (or similarly priced to the 780ti when it was released).

 

But we still don't know if or when it will be released so I would just go with the 980 right now.

If you're determined to get one of those cards, I recommend you wait for the 980ti to come out then get the 980. The price might be something a rational human being would be willing to pay then.

 

Until then the GTX 970 is the sensible purchase.

We know nothing about the 980ti, we don't even know for sure if there will be one at all.

 

Dumping 600$ on a 980 makes no sense. Get 2 R9 290s in crossfire instead, they will blow the 980 out of the water and will probably be cheaper. For about 30$ more you can get 2 970s which will draw less power and run cooler and quieter. Or if you don't want more than one card, go for a single 970, the performance difference is small but it's almost half the price. The R9 290 is less than half the price.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

the 980 ti/ 990 is expected to come out at CES 2015 which i believe is in january, so if you can wait for the new card go ahead. if you need something now, get the 980

depends, what gpu do you have now? It may be worthwhile to wait out this generation. That is what i am doing.

980 and 980ti will be overkill for 1080p, you may as well save nearly 2/3 of your money and get a single R9 290 right now for $220-230.

Just so you know, two 970s or two R9 290Xs are enough for 4K and either solution is about the same amount as one GTX 980 at the moment.

Two 290x's will outperform the 980ti and be a lot cheaper for 4k.

A single 290x will suffice for 1440p.

 

That being said, you should probably wait for the 390(x).

The reason I'm recommending AMD cards is because they have much better price/performance, especially for higher resolutions.

I'd just spring for the 980 right now to be honest.  Even at 4K this card is doing really well with most titles so long as you are judicious with your visual settings, plus if you keep waiting for the next greatest thing then you'll always be waiting since I guarantee you that within two months of the release of the 980Ti the rumor mill will once again be abuzz with hushed whispers of a dark power rising in the east to once more threaten to butthert the ePeen of everyone who "waited" to buy the next greatest thing x-D

I gotcha and I'm considering 2 290Xs but I feel like and lacks a lot of personal features that nvidia has like its control panel, GeForce, etc.

I'm pretty sure Nvidia is going to release a GTX960 and GTX980ti later but for now just get a GTX970 or two and they will do fine. Or wait for the newer version and the GTX980 will probably drop in price a bit. Or wait even longer and get a R9 390X. But those are still rumors

Two 290x's will outperform the 980ti and be a lot cheaper for 4k.

A single 290x will suffice for 1440p.

 

That being said, you should probably wait for the 390(x).

The reason I'm recommending AMD cards is because they have much better price/performance, especially for higher resolutions.

  

Just so you know, two 970s or two R9 290Xs are enough for 4K and either solution is about the same amount as one GTX 980 at the moment.

  

980 and 980ti will be overkill for 1080p, you may as well save nearly 2/3 of your money and get a single R9 290 right now for $220-230.

I gotcha and I'm considering 2 290Xs but I feel like and lacks a lot of personal features that nvidia has like its control panel, GeForce, etc.

 

Then the 970s then :P Seriously the difference between the 970 and the 980 is very little.

We know nothing about the 980ti, we don't even know for sure if there will be one at all.

 

Dumping 600$ on a 980 makes no sense. Get 2 R9 290s in crossfire instead, they will blow the 980 out of the water and will probably be cheaper. For about 30$ more you can get 2 970s which will draw less power and run cooler and quieter. Or if you don't want more than one card, go for a single 970, the performance difference is small but it's almost half the price. The R9 290 is less than half the price.

How about this, get a 970 or a 290 (non x, because it's a lot cheaper and is still fine for 1080p), and whenever you upgrade your monitor, get the next big card. Right now there isn't a single consumer GPU that can max out 4k.

if 980ti/titan 2 is what u want wait for it, 1month, half year what so ever.
new thing is always coming out, u either pay extra for new tech that's not new in 2months or buy something suit u right now.
u're gonna cry if u spend money on 290 now and wait for 980ti.

i also don't get if u change to 1440p, 970 and 290 right now are good enough to power most triple a title games at max. is not a hard choice lol.
unless u're that type trys to get 144refresh rate and max gaming at everysingle game u throw at.
