So I am looking into building a home server to help backup, store, and work with files.  I have gotten into recording games for my guild in games and the videos take up at crap ton of space (over 10GB for a clip raw. Not to mention edited versions as well).  Needless to say this gives me an excuse to make a home server to store all my raw files. Below is a general build that I came up with using prices from the place I work. I would like advice about if this is overkill, under kill, stupid, etc. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks ahead

PS: The Case on the PCPartPicker site is a place holder. I am actually looking at the Logisys CS6501H 4U case.

You might be better using a H97 board instead of the Z97 board

otherwise the build looks good

Hey NoFrownClown,

This build looks great! The PSU might be a bit overkill and I would second what @dragoon20005 said about the motherboard.
WD Red drives are great for what you are going for so great choice. What RAID are you going for? Are you looking for more redundancy or more speed?
As @jayctech pointed out, you might be better off with a smaller SSD (you can cut the cost a but).

Decent build, the power supply is 2 or 3x overkill, I would drop down to a smaller one really. Instead of z87 I would go with h97, butter compatibility and your processor can't be overclocked anyway. Also what RAID are you gonna run? You may want to pick up a RAID card if you are gonna go RAID 5 or 6. Even for lesser raids you may want to pick one up anyway so that in the future if you ever upgrade the board you don't have to wipe and rebuild the array, you can just move the whole controller over.

Thanks for the response guys! I have dropped the PSU to a CS550M. I don't want to go much lower because I am a sucker for overhead with PSU's. I have also swapped to an H97 MOBO and a lower SSD. The new build link is in the edited post above.

@Godlygamer23: I don't know what OS I am going to use. I don't know much about Linux, but would love to make this run off linux. If I don't figure it out by the time I build this guy I may just run WIndows Server.  Any suggestions where I can learn more about that?

@Captain_WD: I would love to run Raid 5. Any suggestions on a raid card? I don't know which are good cards?

If you run it off of like FreeNAS or Openmediavault, I would recommend using a flash drive rather than the SSD. They both take over the boot drive entirely. You can't use them at all.

@Goldygamer23

Thanks for that advice. I have looked at FreeNAS before and considered it. Do you use FreeNAS? any advice about FreeNAS?

I use FreeNAS currently with my server. Honestly, I'm very new to it still, so I can't really give anyone advice on actually using it. If you decide to use it, if you ever hit the diagnosis screen during the installation, it will look like it's frozen and it'll just sit there. Even though it's not giving any output, it's actually processing a lot of information. Give it 15-20 minutes and it should fully complete the installation.

Sadly, as an Industry affiliated, I cannot recommend specific brand or models. What I could suggest is posting another topic with the specific question for a good RAID card and your needs and I'm sure some of the guys here will recommend you some good one to choose from. Your other option is to dig around for some reviews and feedback and gather some choices and then post them here for opinions and reviews. :)

RAID5 sounds like a great option ,giving you a good speed boost, 1 drive failure tolerance and still a lot of usable space.
