How far can PSUs go

FifteenOnes

I have the Alienware x51 r2 computer. The specs are

-Intel Core i5 4430 @ 3.00 Ghz

-Corsair Vengeance Pro 1600 Mhz 16gb ram

-Nvidia Geforce GTX 645

-1tb of 7200 RPM sata HDD

-Random Mini ITX Motherboard

I was thinking about upgrading my Video card to the EVGA Geforce GTX 970 SC. I have been to Cooler Master's PSU calculator and It says I need 341 Watts. I have a 330 Watt PSU external brick, because the Alienware x51 r2 does not have an internal PSU. Will the 330 Watt be enough to run the new video card

Only he who can yeet with skeet my dood can skeet the yeet, yeet is my dood, but if skeet cannot yeet and yeet cannot skeet who is my dood?

Probably not since the PSU doesn't actually give you 330 watts

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

It will but don't overclock anything or load your PC up with USB shenanigans. I say new PSU but that's just me.

Nope. you'll want at least a 550 watt or 600 watt PSU to drive a 970. also, shame on you for buying an alienware.

The 970 is very power efficient and can run on 400W PSUs, or even 350W PSUs if they are high quality (80+ gold or platinum) from a reliable manufacturer.

On Nvidia's website it says you need at least 500w because of connectors to run a 970

Ok there is only one problem with the new PSU idea. The system uses a external brick. It is pretty much a laptop charger on steroids. Also 550 watts would be a complete overkill.

This.

And that PC will use maybe 300 watts under load. People WAY over-estimate how much power computers actually use. A new PSU is still probably a good idea (thinking Supernova G2 for the bang-for-the-buck goodness it offers) even if the wattage is super overkill.

I would forget it. This is going to be a headache no matter what you do. You would be better served to sell the system as is and start from scratch. That is the only way to upgrade properly.

You're not gonna make it. Get a 750 Ti, or wait for GTX 950/960 and see how much power those use.

Even 550 is overkill for a single 970 system.
