Hey

I am a first time builder, and i thought i had the temps under control, until i saw realtemp.

I have a 4790k paired with a maximus vii ranger and a coolermaster hyper 212 evo.

I ran aida64 for a couple of hours yesterday, only saw the package temp at 69c, and was like: That is cool.

Then i downloaded realtemp, and two of my cores are peaking 86, while the rest are staying at 75-80. Is this a safe temp? This is with gpu/cpu load at the same time.

The reason for why i am asking if this is normal, is because when i installed the cooler, i had to change position of the mounting bracket that goes onto the bottom of the cooler. I put it in the wrong way. Then, the cooler was slightly shifted to the right, and now i fear that the thermal paste might be spread in an awkward way.

My ambient is 20-22c btw, and in the summers it can go up to 30c.

So, is the temps alright? and what should i be looking for, cpu temp or core temp.

Not a highend cooler, but the temps are OK.

I personally don´t like it when my i7 reaches 60°C.

Everyone has his own opinion about the temperature.

The temps are still too high. The 212 is an excellent cooler, and should be doing better than that.

I think he's installed it improperly.

It does run at 4.4ghz though, that is my thought. Maybe the speed of the fan? I am going to try and turbo the fan and see the temps

two quick posts in a row, i know.

Running CPU only, max fans it is peaking 74. Does that sound more right?

Still running 4.4ghz

Edit:

Peaked 79 for two of the cores, package stays at 65.

Edit 2:

It peaked 86 again.

With max fans, i find it a little bit too loud though, but now it only peaks 86, before it stayed at 86.

That can be an option, it´s worth a try to switch the direction and replace the thermal paste.

If you look at the cooler, it´s not a giant... not that much space + 4 copper lines, Just a little bigger than a Artic freezer 15$ cooler :/

Will i be able to clean off the cpu with 93% ethanole? I don't have rubbing alchohol. It vaporizes quickly though, as in disappears. Don't know how else to explain it

I'm guessing water is bad since it stays much longer.

I was thinking of using the ethanol because it goes away quickly. It is some housecleaning thing we use for the windows.

Also, for when taking out the cooler, i noticed it kinda sticks with the thermal paste. how do i take it off safely, as in not ripping out the cpu and killing the motherboard.

I'd rather not :) We have lots of the ethanol thing. Don't mind using a little.

Also, do you guys know what temps i should expect for the peak of the hottest cores at 4.4ghz?

I guess i'm not too far off then? Is it really worth it to reinstall the cooler then?

Also consider the fact that it IS 4.4ghz, not just 4.2/4.0 stock

Sounds about right for 4.4ghz, you may want to look into a better cooler though if you want to get those temps down.

Sorry I just kept it realistic. Maybe lower, maybe higher.

It´s up to you, decide if you want lower idle and lower peak temperatures.

It is in danish "Denatureret Ethanol", quite close to the english one. It is 93% and says nothing about anything else in it. My dad calls it "Wood spirit", which i'm guessing is bad. Can it possibly have damaged the IHS? Maybe i should just wait and buy some proper cleaning stuff, i believe i can buy some arctic clean from somewhere in denmark.

Have you already used it?

Google the name of it, the contents should be found online.

Have you read through these?

Okay, will do - keep eyes open for an edit - Edit: http://www.hardwareonline.dk/traad.aspx?tid=772987&fid=3

Its a danish thread on the exact thing i was asking about. They are saying it is totally fine.

I did not manage to find out what the other 7% was though. I am supposed to wipe it once with something dry when it is clean, as it leaves the denaturing thing behind.

Yes

Found this gem online: http://www.matas.dk/matas-isopropylalkohol-99-175-ml

99% isopropyl alcohol. Should i just order it, and be happy that i have something that definitely will work for cleaning the cpu?

Honestly, i don't think it's worth the risk.

Order the isopropyl, and be sure that it'll work.

You could probably get it from somewhere local

I honestly don't think i can get isopropyl alcohol anywhere local. Most things where i live, i have to order over the web.

Well, i'm surprised. I just need to go 6 miles, and i am near the shop with the alcohol. I will be getting that then, and be back with temps once i'm done. It is only open next monday, so i will have to wait.

Back again, tried to clean it as good as i could with isopropyl alcohol 99%.

I took the worst of the thermal paste with some toilet paper, and wiped over with a microfiber cloth, both dry and wet(dry at last)

Peak temp is now on core 2, 85c with an aggresive profile. Other cores peak 83, 79, 77.

Still too bad? I put a very small line in the middle of the cpu. Both the cooler and the cpu was 100% clean(or as clean as they could get.

I also found out, running 1.286v on 4.4ghz. That might be why its higher than usual?

What is the cooling situation in your case

Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) should work better than ethanol.  Methanol will work better than ethanol too.

The silicone grease they use in thermal interface materials dissolves better in isopropyl alcohol so it is easier to clean it all off.  You want a high percentage because that helps to get rid of the old silicone.  It also means less water and the residual evaporates faster.

Water is a real concern - not necessarily because it will cause an electrical short, but more because it can keep the new thermal grease from spreading.  Then when everything heats up it evaporates and leaves you with an air pocket.  That's about the worst thing you can do.
