Gigabyte HD 7970 SOC flash to Ghz edition and some other thoughts

samuel

pressshot.jpg

First of all, I don't have it yet. It's coming the day after tomorow.

But I'm already thinking about flashing it to Ghz edition, just to be more...modern! (Boost and such). BUT, will it work? It's not a reference design, no idea of the revision, all I know is that I have a very handy bios switch...

Second of all, two fans have lost one and two blades respectively. Should I replace them all 5 fans? The owner said it's working just fine... And I can return it within three days no questions asked. $200, a very good deal in my area.

I will not overclock it at all I think. My 500W Sirtec (The PSU in signature had a nasty surpise for me,,,)will not be that happy with the new guest..I  actually plan to undervolt this beast while keeping GHZ edition clocks....  AAAND there is a perfect mach...the lenght of the video card is exactly the max lenght supported by my Z11...some bending planed!

I apologise for bragging, I mostly need to know about the bios flashing.

Any thoughts on cheaply fixing that?  :)

Not really...because of the way that GPU is designed... :(

Maybe if you can take the front shroud off and put some 80 or 92mm quiet fans instead of those tiny jet engines :)

Full after market cooler like a gelid icy vision or an accelero 3 would sort you out :-)

Broken fan blades cause vibrarion as the fans are unbalanced

I know about the unbalanced fans, that guy said it's not that bad. An accelero is the last solution tbh... It's just too expensive. Maybe some ugly and weird sealed tubing with a nice big 120 or 140 mm fan at the end... It's not like this card isn't weird already.

Les noisy fans :

you do realise that your 12v rails on your psu are rated at 20A which is 240w so you really should use that gpu with that psu. also dont replace the heatsink. the fans should never need to go at all

Should I? Or should I not?

I basically plan to NOT stress the card with furmark. Or I could just hook up an VGA 8pin from Supeflower. another psu fits in the 5.25 driver if i really want it.....

I replaced it after suspecting it of doing damage to HDDs...

With a knife and lots of patience I could straighten the aluminium fins after taking the shroud off. But the air will still have to leave on the sides... (the vapor chambre gets in it's way).

its the peaks that kill your psu and even in crysis 2 its spiking over 250w

The SF 550W has a really stable 12v rail.. I think I'll use the entire PSU just for the card.

EDIT: nope, I won't! read this :

here are some (very) low quality pics:

The PCB is about 1 cm too long, it's now in the dvd bay area... Flashed an Asus 280x bios with my custom clocks, voltages and fan profile. It's not that noisy, especially when that one faulty fan is stopped. Very proud of my aquisition,

I am very sory about the dust and picture qualiy, I will do a true build log if anyone is interested.
