Problem With Pings

Ok so my internet connection is not bad, 3 up and down and it usually stays consistent, and I have a ping in game usually under 10Ms. However whenever anyone else starts using the internet for streaming, browsing, whatever my ping shoots up to the 150-300 range.

 

My question is could this be the fault of my router? Or my isp?

3 up and down is bad not not bad. You need pretty much the whole 3 to watch a 720p video.

That's a bandwidth issue, to get even a 480p video going you are using a big chunk of those 3Mb, so your games suffer from not being able to transfer the needed data near real time, causing severe ping and lag.

 

The best choice would be to upgrade your speeds, but again, if you go let's say to 10mb, if someone starts watching a 1080p video and also doing some other stuff, it's going to hit you (not as bad though).

Another way is to configure your router to do a smarter package prioritization, from basic QoS to more complex custom rules. You will need to learn a couple of things regarding networking though.

Had the same problem. Mostly with downloads while gaming, so I just turned the downloads off. But what helped also was giving my computer highest priority for bandwidth on the router if you have access to it
