Ubuntu won't shut down

It was working, but then somehow ubuntu started not shutting down properly. This happened after I accidentally pressed advanced options and then pressed enter, thinking it was the same thing. 10384031_892904014066846_144576984151016

Now, instead of shutting down I get this: 10406523_892903984066849_118188068833086

How do I fix this? And how do I not display the GNU grub launcher when I boot up also?

on the second image, it doesn't show enough information. Could you press the ESC key when this screen is displayed and post back.  :P

@Altecice No, I can't. Every key I press doesn't do anything on the keyboard. It just says basically the same thing.

Are you able to swap to another session Ctrl+Alt+F1-7 some of them will be black screens but one of them may show more details.

If it wont switch to  another session, before you shut down press Ctrl+Alt+F1 and log in there then issue the command "shutdown -h now" and then take a photo of that if it hangs while shutting down.

Can't swap session, keys don't respond. Tried the shutdown command and this happened: 10620007_892924630731451_198646590249426

Ahh....modem manager issues is confirmed to be a bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/upstart/+bug/1174272 The solution using sudo shutdown -r 0 worked around it.

Not a lot you can do except issue the command above for the meantime :(

So what bug is this related to? Can I fix this by uninstalling something and will this be patched in the future?

Also, how do I stop the GNU GRUB launcher from running everytime I start the machine? I just want it to boot into default every time.

The GRUB launcher only becomes default when there has been a few "not clean" shutdowns/startups. But this is to be expected in your case. The above post tells you how to make it go away :P.

Im not sure about your first question you will need to read more into the bug.

@Tonylu1595, little guide from Ubuntu forum/questions:

To not see the GRUB menu while booting:1 Open the /etc/default/grub file using from terminal entering: gksu gedit /etc/default/grub2 Change GRUB_TIMEOUT=10 to GRUB_TIMEOUT=03 Save the file and quit the text editor.4 Run: sudo update-grub5 Reboot.

Link: http://askubuntu.com/questions/18775/how-to-remove-or-hide-the-grub-boot-menu

I did everything that said and it still doesn't go away.

Paste your grub configuration file here.

sudo gedit /etc/default/grub

That bug as seen has already been patched a long while ago.

It turns up empty. I have to go though the files again to get to the grub file.

Edit: It works now

Your grub configuration file is the original that ships with Ubuntu so that's not the problem as long as you ran.

sudo update-grub

I personally would just re-install Ubuntu it's fast and easy so I see why not.

Is there an easy command to delete Ubuntu?
