Hi,

For Christmas I have got these parts, my budget is £400 and I want to game at 1080p maybe 1440p ir even 4k but don't suspect it will, any way around 50 - 60 fps. Also I will be eventually upgrading the CPU to an i5 or i7.

Thanks

I don't think a 280 can do 1440p and not at all 4K. Especially not paired with a dual core Pentium processor.

With that build you'll be getting around 40-50 fps on max settings on most games, and around 50-60 if you are willing to overclock or play at lower settings.

Also I will be eventually upgrading the CPU to an i5 or i7.

The best CPU for gaming that you can get is the i5 4690K. Don't get an i7, the 2% increase in performance is not worth the money.

i7 4790K || R9 290X + R9 290 || 16GB G.Skill TridentX 1866 || Gigabyte Z97MX Gaming 5 || Crucial MX100 256GB || WD Caviar Blue 1TB

this was true a year or two ago but things are changing now the games released are all well multi-threaded and highly benefit from more cpu threads...here's an example of a newer game:

http--www.gamegpu.ru-images-stories-Test

As you can see from this graph, at such a low resolution we can clearly see how the CPU can handle this game and the i5 is clearly inferior...

we even see AMD FX CPU's outperforming it and getting better minimums.

One can only assume that they will continue down that route now and from now looking forward a lot of CPU intensive mutli-threaded games

will hit the market making the core i7 a MUCH better choice in regards to gaming, that's a given.

Quick note to OP : there are games released now that will even refuse to launch on the pentium G3258 (dragon age, Cod AW, farcry4...)

and when they do many of them run's very poorly with a lot of stuttering and hitching...i would suggest you get at least a core i3

and if possible a locked core i5 instead.

yeah, the pentium isn't the best idea.  i3 would be better, locked i5 would be ideal...

I think you could spend less on the motherboard

What? Multi core gaming is already a thing? I've... missed stuff.

devs had enough time since the new consoles came out to assess on hardware available and develop games for it and the results are now showing up...and it will continue.

My 270 can play Dirt 3 @ 4k on high, Skyrim @ 4k on high, BF4 @ 4k medium all with AA turned down and 50+ fps

So yea, a 280 CAN do 1440p easily. The 7950 was made for 1440p (which is a 280)

Does this mean that the 280 can run 4k?

In less-demanding games yes, but I don't recommend it because newer non-perfectly optimized games won't do so well. I think the only reason I get such good FPS on BF4 is because it's so well optimized for a high-end title.

Games like FC4 are unplayable though (all low @ 4k and still only get 20-25 fps)

Stick with 1440p for now unless you plan to get a 290(x)/380(x)/390(x) or a 970/980 in my opinion
