The i5 is enough.

I wouldn't get a titan z, I'd go with 2x GTX 970s or 2x 980s instead.

Hey guys,

How well would a I5-4590/i7-4790 handle 2 way crossfire/2-3 way SLI?

are they strong enough to handle crossfire/SLI, or am i better off just getting something like a titan Z and leaving it at that??

A Titan Z is exactly the same as SLI

that i5 or i7 will not hold back SLI or Crossfire graphics cards

I would get an intel 4690k because it is by far the best value for gaming in it's price range.

So instead of being a doofy, get sli 980's because they would be massively faster and that money you are not wasting get a 5820k cpu instead so you don't have to upgrade anytime in the near future cpu wise.

3 way SLI would require a PLX chip on your MOBO, not enough lanes on the CPU (Nvidia requires x8 per card minimum in SLI) you could get away with a 3 way crossfire (only requires x4 per card minimum) but the benefit would be negligible.

^^^best suggestion^^^

Unless you're playing on 1440p+, spanning multiple monitors, or above 60Hz one gtx 970 should be able to handle nearly any game on high/ultra settings.

For CPU bottleneck concerns, the number of video cards you're using doesn't really matter, per se: your framerate does. If you're going to cap your framerate at 60 FPS, you're rarely if ever going to have a CPU-related issue. If you're aiming for 120 or 144 FPS, you might start to see the i5's limitations show in some games, but the difference is usually miniscule.

An i5 is basically an i7 sans-Hyperthreading, so if core usage isn't an issue the two will perform almost identically.

Definitely do not get a Titan Z. Please. I'd go for SLI 980s instead.

As for the CPU, you should be pretty much OK, I don't see either of those CPUs bottlenecking the GPU(s) to an extent that would matter, although games are becoming more and more demanding nowadays and whether they would be sufficient standalone performance-wise is another matter.

Thank you.

Wardojack.

2x r9 290(x)'s are going to give you better or equal performance to 980 SLI, especially at higher resolutions. It'll be almost half the price as well.

As for i5 vs i7, I'd go for the i7 just to not have to worry about CPU performance as much for a while, and IMO, if you're going SLI/Crossfire, you should probably not skimp on the CPU either.

If heat and power ARE NOT a concern 290x's are going for cheap as hell right now. Also get a 5820k so you dont have to upgrade for a while if you have enough money for it.
