So I've upgraded from a 4gb 770 to a 970 and it I don't think it was worth it. Although I sold the 770 from $300, so only paid like $80 for the Gigabyte G1 Gaming version, I feel like the difference is negligible. Although the backplate and led's are awesome, and I find myself looking at them more lol.

So if you have a 700 series card I don't recommend upgrading, just my 2 cents even though I bet a lot of you know this.

Thank you for reassuring everything everyone has been saying when people ask if they should jump from 770 to 970!

Only worth if you're planning SLI imo

770 is essentially a mildly overclocked 680, so I think it is worth it but of course this is subjective.

It's definitely would not be worth it in any situation if one owns a 780.

Case: Corsair 4000D Airflow; Motherboard: MSI ZZ490 Gaming Edge; CPU: i7 10700K @ 5.1GHz; Cooler: Noctua NHD15S Chromax; RAM: Corsair LPX DDR4 32GB 3200MHz; Graphics Card: Asus RTX 3080 TUF; Power: EVGA SuperNova 750G2; Storage: 2 x Seagate Barracuda 1TB; Crucial M500 240GB & MX100 512GB; Keyboard: Logitech G710+; Mouse: Logitech G502; Headphones / Amp: HiFiMan Sundara Mayflower Objective 2; Monitor: Asus VG27AQ

would a 970 be worth it from a r9 280x, IF I'm going to run a 1440p monitor on the card?

you can´t expect wonders, but it´ll help if you reach 20fps in games with your 280x.

Maybe you´ll get with the 970 35-45fps?

But I think it would be worth it, if you use HD texturepacks etc in games and your 280x has "only" 2gb vram.

If you´re planning to upgrade in future, sell the 280x before the new generation is released.

I kinda wish I would of read Grimmjow660's answer 2 weeks ago.... Yeah if you are planning a 1440p and no if you are sticking to 1080p for a while.

I had the XFX R9 280X and got the 970 STRIX and don't notice a single thing really. Everything plays and looks the same to me- still had texture pop in issues!! the R9 was about 6 months old so it didn't really need to be replaced so soon IMO.

Completely depends on your use. FOr example im debating upgrading from a 780ti to a 980 simply for the extra vram. Im capping my 780ti out atm on skyrim so the extra gb would give me a much more playable experience, but for the majority of users no its not worth upgrading to the same class card for at least 2 years.
