I currently have an AMD Radeon HD 7770 and a AMD Phenom x4 965 Black Edition (3.4Ghz)

I am planning on upgrading the 7770 to a NVIDIA GTX 970, but would this be a bottleneck?

Also, what would be the maximum GPU that I could that wouldn't be a HUGE bottleneck?

I have an OCZ 750w 80+ Bronze PSU btw if anyone is wondering.

Yes it would be a bottleneck. In fact, it will bottleneck any GPU you use, because of the poor core performance of AMD CPUs.

It doesnt matter what graphics card you use, the game always uses the CPU anyway.

Sine the 970 performs very well, you will still be able to play games at very high settings, but you will just have less fps than you would with a better CPU.

So you can either buy the 970 now and deal with less performance than you should be getting until you can afford a new CPU+mobo, or upgrade your CPU+mobo now and buy the 970 in the future.

It definitely would be a bottleneck, maybe a 270? I'd be afraid even that would be a significant bottleneck. If you really want I can put my 270 in my Phenom II rig and test it for you (tomorrow).

Yeah it would be a bottleneck.  The highest I'd go would be a 270X.

How about stop using that stupid word? I don't see it causing a problem.

It's not a stupid word, it's a legitimate issue. A 970 won't perform even close to its maximum potential if paired with a 965, resulting in what is called a bottleneck.

Okay thanks you answered very well. I'll have a think on it, as I only really have the money for the GPU and not a new CPU and Mobo.

Actually now that @Enderman mentioned it, I remember upgrading from my 960T to a 3570k resulted in almost twice the FPS in games (like BF3) using only a 6750. So I don't think anything would be worth an upgrade other than a CPU/Motherboard at this point.

You're welcome :)

You can think of it like this:

CPU X will decrease your framerate by Y% when using any GPU.

The more powerful the GPU, the more fps you get, but also the more fps you lose because of the CPU.

So a 970 would still perform better than a 280x, but both of them will be running at 100-Y% of their potential.

I suggest you get the GPU now and live with a few less frames for a while, and start saving up for a new CPU+mobo in the future.

One possible option, if you have a Microcenter near you, is jump on the G3258+Z97 mobo for $100 deal and buy a 290 for $230. This'll be the same price as a 970 and you can upgrade to something like an i5 whenever you get money.

Get the r290, really cheap and great performance.

And don´t set the whole bottleneck thing in your head.

This only appears in multiplayers or cpu heavy games, like gta iv etc.

And the fps difference is about max 40fps, while you reach 70fps with your existing cpu.

Gpu heavy games are running like a A+ on this gpu and don´t care about cpu performance at all.
