Do you know a program that does this?

Auklin

Hello everyone,

I just purchased a new rig and I want to allow my brother/ family to use it while I'm not.

Simply, I am looking for a program that Sandboxes an entire user account. I'll have my account for administrative purposes, and if (for example) my 7 year old baby brother wants to play it, he can sign into his account and download all his virus's and all his adult content and stuff, then once he shuts the computer off, it will completely reset his account to its starting state.

Of course, that was a joke, I do have a 13 year old brother that I do trust a bit more. I essentially want to be able to make his whole account 'sandboxed' so if (say, over 3 months) he gets brave and downloads a keygen or something thinking its some free gold generating program or something. Than it will be 'trapped' to his account, and once my antivirus picks it up, I can just restore his entire account to a previous state, without any of this ever affecting my account.

of course, this account will have NO access to hardware, with customizable access to software (I can let him use steam, but not programs that affect hardware performance)

Thanks for your help guys, and if no such program exists, It is always optional for me to just not allow them to use it.

- J

I don't know if sucha program exists, but you can sandbox certain processes. I.E. Chrome, Firefox, etc whenever they're opened on that account. The software you can use is Sandboxie. It costs money technically, but it is free if you want to deal with a slight delay when it's opened.

I love that program and use it regularly, it is what made me use the word sanbox, but I don't think it will help me too much in this case :(

Check out this link: http://downloadsquad.switched.com/2009/03/11/five-sandboxing-apps-to-protect-your-windows-computer/

Might find a program in the list that will be helpful to you.

maybe run a virtual machine with a fresh windows install and restricted hw access  have no idea if that is how virtual machines  work

Edit just went and took a read ... ok so most virtual machines do not allow true access to the host hardware

(1) high frame rate (2) ultra graphics settings (3) cheap...>> choose only two<<...

if it's never been done then i'm probably tryna do it. (((((((Bass so low it HERTZ)))))))

Pssst... System Restore.

But seriously you need to booby trap your computer so it won't power on some how, maybe buy a 24 Pin extention cable and make sure the remaining length won't reach the motherboard.

Beause if they are on the system in any way you are vunerable.

Well maybe a second boot drive, just take yours with you or hide it so they can use the computer with the second boot disk and ruin it if they want and you can always leave that infected drive for them to re-live what they did.

I roll with sigs off so I have no idea what you're advertising.

This is NOT the signature you are looking for.

Hot swap boot drives 4tw.  Each member of the family gets one.  Since no two would be plugged in at the same time you could technically even cheat and use the same windows license for each install.  That might not be legal though so if you decide to do it I am going to have to say I made the statement as a joke and did not intend for you to actually do it :P

Lock drive C, so only the person with the passcode can install programs there (ex. Your softwares, games, tools...etc)

Make drive D his drive, it's where he installs all his stuff. Whenever you want to clean it up just go to my Computer, Right click on the Local Disk, and Format. Takes 10 seconds.

You won't delete his files when he shuts down the PC, but you can manually do it.

Could you not just set a nightly backup of a fresh install? (probably require more than 1 drive)

Main Rig: i5 760 @ 4.0GHZ Asus p7p55d-e, 8GB Corsair Vengance @ 1600 Mhz. Samsung BX2231 X 3 (5760x1080)

                EVGA GTX 680 Superclocked +150/+500, 128GB Crucial M4, 1TB WD Black

Xonar DX, AudioEngine A2, Astro Mixamp, AudioTechnica ath-m50 & ath-ad700

interesting ideas. I am more looking for a program that does this sort of thing though, I know that their must be one out there.

I'd use a quick swap drive if I felt like buying one, and as of right now, I'm not sure how they work, I'm gonna go look that up.

Hmmm, I don't know. Would dual boot work? Run 2 os, and switch between them. You use one and he on the other. Partition the drive and back up his so you can easily restore his partitioned part while you keep yours secure.

I like that idea... aside from needing to restart my PC (which is totally ok with me), are there any possible cons to this option? I'm not completely familiar with viruses and stuff, I just now how to recognize them and take precautions, could it affect another OS on the same drive?

No cons that I know of. Though if you wanna stay super safe from malware, it'd be best to use a Linux based OS.

you could try using a ramdisk that will not save any modifications and that will be the only drive your brother will be able to use. (maybe this will work, I'm just guessing:D)

Interesting, I'm under the impression that I will need to get a separate drive to allow this, unless I'm able to 'seperate' a drive so some of it is used by my OS  and some is theirs.

I like this Idea of a separate OS running on this separate drive, as well as using Deep Freeze to easily re-image it if something goes wrong.

I'd hopefully be able to completely restrict access to the hardware of the computer, download Avast, and essentially protect my PC from this 'parasite' of an OS haha

The reason I want to keep my family's OS completely separate is that back when I used to use the home computer, it was a mess, and I love knowing exactly what goes into my OS and what changes I make, so I want them to be completely separate from my computer, and allow me to easily reimage their OS if they do something dumb.

I like the idea of using Linux, but I'm sure my brother would like to use my 780 for some of his games, so I don't think Linux is a good idea for that

Group policies are made for this.

Viruses/Trojans don't care for Group Policies.
