8gb of gddr5 ram for 4k?

Zach's Tech Tips

VRAM don't stack in SLI or Crossfire. Two 4gb cards will only have 4gb usable memory, not 8gb. And two 8gb cards will only have, 8gb of usable memory instead of 16gb. Memory is cloned on both cards so they do not stack.

Building a system like the Autobahn Hammer http://instagram.com/p/vVot-TSbOp/ with 8gb cards would destroy 4k gaming, plus samsung 4k freesync monitors are coming out early next year which will help with screen tearing.

Hey linus community

I am investing in a new pc and i was wondering if i should get a r9 295x2, 2x gtx 980's or even 2x r9 290x 8gb edition for a total of 16gb of gddr5.but do i need 8gb or 16gb for a 4k or would i be fine with a 4gb card.

Thanks

VRAM doesn't work that way when it comes to SLI or Crossfire scaling. This is a common misconception. In SLI/Crossfire, the information has to be duplicated across all other cards. This means if you have two 980s, each with 8GB of VRAM, the total effective amount of VRAM is 8GB. Not 16.

I'd wait till amd releases their r9 390x.  It'll be a lot more powerful and have a more vram then the current normal r9 290x.   Something with more power and hopefully more vram.

Unlikely rumors are indicating only 4GB for 390x and 8GB model...They're gonna have HBM which currently has a physical limit of about 4 GB but on the bright side it should have very high bandwidth (as the name implies HBM=HighBandwidthMemory)  equivalent to a 1024 bit bus of GDDR5... and look at the 285 compared to 280 or 280x as a sight into the next gen higher bandwidth lower memory count... The 8GB 290x  is more or less AMD hoping people with say Titans will go to upgrade hearing about the 980 and notice 8GB 290x's and buy them thinking "OMG more Vram"
