Audiophiles help!

So iv'e had the asus xonar essence for coming up to a year now and still haven't got any nice headphones. I was looking at spending up to £300 but i'd like to stay under £250 if possible. I'm gonna be using them for music, pretty much all kinds of music but i would still like surround because i do game and watch films too.

"Audiophiles" owns a soundcard and has no clue on good headphones.

Sorry, just annoys me when people chase the oh so great "audiophiles" snake oil at best mate.

Hahaha yeah i know i'm pretty shit with audio equipment :P The "audiophile" use in the title was just for attention and yeah iv'e heard that soundcards aren't amazing and you should use other means to get better audio but it was recommend to me so i just bought it. But do you have any suggestion? Of course iv'e got ideas on some good headphones but just wanted a more experienced opinion than random threads online

HD 600 or 650 - enough impedance to get over the dampening factor and sensitive enough to not tax the amplifier circuit.

Other options are DT770/880/990 and AKG series, K612,701,712, also ATH-AD700/AD900 are a good option too.

If you like the sound signature of sennheiser then yea, go for HD600.

HD518 - HD558 are good options as well, they're similar to the sound signature of the 600's.  Cheaper too.

Yep, 3rd this motion! ;)

Don't be afraid to go used.  ^_^

Yes, if OP can score one used for a good price, why the heck not? Besides, used cans are already 'burnt in' so you don't have to waste time burning them in. My HD800 and Beyer DT990/600 and the soon to be had Audeze LCD2.2 are used, fact is, other than the HD555, Klipsch Image One BT, Ety ER 6 SE215, all other cans and IEM's are used. Yep, I buy used audio hardware.....and proud of it! B)

Heh, I hate to waste time and energy burning in cans, I've heard some cans take up to 100 hours to 'burn in'.....don't got time for that! :D

Burn-ins, Myth or Legend? :D

With all the cross opinions, some say true, some say not true, I'm guessing it's true, with a condition. Perhaps, and it's a big perhaps, in the past, the membrane's materials used were very rigid out of the factory, and do require burn-ins. With technological advancements, perhaps they replace it with newer material that are more consistent in its flexibility. Only speculation though...

I'm hearing more voodoo from you again.

Suh prize.

Never diss Voodoo!! It was the only contender to the almighty Nvidia, so much that Nvidia got scared and bought the company to eliminate a threat....

Burn in is 100% true. That doesn't mean you should speak like it makes a huge difference. If it did make a difference, there's be more cases of the sound going from good to worse, and I've only heard one eccentric friend say this about one headphone.

The person getting used to the sound signature of the headphone, etc, far outweighs whatever "gains" (and always gains?) from burn-in. It's also very prone to placebo and bias. And also, my reply to his comment was a reference to another one of his posts in another thread.

Anyways, to the OP, it might actually make sense to sell the sound card and use that money on headphones instead. What exactly are you using the STX for? Cuz' Dolby Headphones sucks. Sooooo much.

I am always willing to listen as I am in the process of learning. But let me emphasize, I am willing to listen but it doesn't mean that I have to heed whatever advice that is given. When questions are asked about audio, they are objective in nature, but answers and/or advice are invariably subjective in nature. There is no answer that is the gospel truth. It is up to the person asking to make value judgement based on what he can glean from the subjective advice/answers given. If you say I am wrong, I am willing to listen to you elaborate as to why I am wrong, as long as you do 't resort insults and whatnot, educate away.

ShearMe already said pretty much what I was going to say 2 posts above this one. Burn-in is fairly negligible. I used to think burn-in was a thing too because that's what Jlabs audio told me when I bought their IEMs. I tried it and couldn't hear a difference. I haven't heard a difference in any of my other numerous headphones after burn-in either.

I didn't mean to imply that it made much difference in the first place. I buy my cans used, with the understanding that I can return them no questions asked. With a used pair of cans, it's been burnt in, thus the sound I get from the can, if it agrees with me, it's the sound I'm willing to pay for. That is basically what I'd meant when I was talking about burn in, NOT that it made a world of difference.

Also, I did talk about objective questions and subjective answers.....some swear this or that made a huge difference, others swear they hear little to no difference. Hence, my attitude towards audio, I glean whatever info I can get from questions raised, and make my own judgement. After all, if the DAC/AMP/Cans/Audio source give me the kind of sound I sought or want, that should be all that matters.
