AKG K240 vs Superlux HD668B

Go to solution Solved by Lays,

and this amp does its job pretty well?

Of course, anyone who tells you to spend more on an amp than headphones is a person that doesn't know much about how audio works.  There are plenty of options for headphone amps that won't murder your wallet.

i have been trying to decide between the AKG K240 and Superlux HD668B as an upgrade from my audio technica ath m20x headphones which are okay but pinch my ears to the point of being unbearable after a couple hours of use. i also feel like i could have gotten a little more audio and build quality for a similar price. i do a lot of gaming and editing and i was looking at the tek syndicate review of the HD668B headphones and wanted to know how they stacked up against the k240 which cost almost twice as much. for those who have used both, is there a difference in quality and is that difference significant enough to justify the extra price of the k240 headphones? looking forward to your answers!

and as always thanks in advance! :-)

I haven't used the k240's but they look EXACTLY the same as the 668b's so I can't imagine there being a drastic improvement of quality. I will recommend how ever if your ears stick out a bit like mine do then the 668b's do get painful after like 5 hours of use. Like when I game for like 10 hours straight it hurts to the point where I HAVE to take them off because I can't stand it anymore. Probably just because I have wider ears though.

the cups seem significantly larger then what i currently have and i was thinking of pairing them with some softer 3rd party ear pads. as for the comparison yes they do look similar but that doesn't always mean they sounds the same. thanks for the input though :-)

The 668Bs sound nice for their price, I can't quite comment on the comfort since I have larger than normal ears... I haven't tried the K240s yet (haven't seen AKGs available for in-shop trials)...

Then yea you shouldn't have to worry about them pressing too hard on your ears. I also need to get a different pair of ear pads. and what I mean by look the same is the driver housing construction is damn near identical. That being said they are probably using the same drivers.

I've heard MANY good things about the K240, being a very good headphone for studio usage, but I've also heard they need proper amplification to run properly.

whats the bare minimum one should pay for a headphone amp? i know there are some low price amps but i heard some where that anything below $100 isn't worth it or something.. maybe i'm thinking of a microphone amp. also i love your profile pic

There are plenty of headphone amps under $100 that compete with vastly more expensive amps.

The syba dac+amp is a prime example:

maybe. but Lauen. suggested that k240's may need some extra amprage get the most out of them. and IF thats true then there must be a difference between them and the 668B's in terms of quality.

Either way, TONS of people for some reason think that spending more on headphone amps = a better experience, when lots of science disproves this, people still ignore it and spend thousands of dollars anyways.

Oh well, to each their own. :D

so i think i have made my choice. im gonna go for the HD668Bs' by superlux. i would have looked at the k240's paired with an amp if i wasn't also planning to get an AntLion mod mic. but since i am, im gonna go for the HD668b. otherwise i would be spending almost $200 which is a bit over meh budget. thanks guys for the help :-) also lauon. your pic is badass and it made my day xD
