New Intel socket (rumoured)

Go to solution Solved by Speedbird,

Hello everyone, a while back i remember Linus mentioning a new socket by intel regrading Broadwell and Skylake in 2015? Is there anyone that can help out a bit with the info? Thanks in advance!

LGA1151 for Skylake.

LGA1151 for Skylake.

Yep thank you, and yes it seems like they are changing sockets every two generations, and it seems there is not much point in waiting for Skylake since broadwell already supports ddr4.

Broadwell will not support DDR4. It has to use existing Z97 and H97 chipset motherboards, which only have sockets for DDR3.

Enthusiast-grade stuff like Haswell-E and Broadwell-E are different from mainstream ones. Broadwell-E (on LGA2011-3) will support DDR4 only, Broadwell-K (on LGA1150) will support DDR3 only, Skylake-S (LGA1151) will support DDR4 and probably DDR3 too.

The problem is that i want to buy a new water cooler but am looking wether or not it will support the socket that supports DDR4.

LGA2011, LGA1155, LGA1150, LGA1336, LGA775 are all compatible with modern day coolers, so presumably the next socket will be compatible as well.

But DDR4 won't affect performance very much; even DDR2 isn't much of a bottleneck by itself (but rather by the hardware thats paired with it). So the next upgrade you make shouldn't be to gain DDR4 support, but rather to get a faster CPU.

Yes, i will go for a better CPU over the RAM but i just want that headroom of being able to do so.

This is the cooler im talking about:

And yes the fashion of the all supported sockets for the cooling division is encouraging but i just dont know weather it will or wont support it.

No one will

You seem pretty knowledgeable on this stuff. I know that DDR4 isn't much of a difference over DDR3, but would waiting for one of these new CPU sockets be worth it? Compared to buying like an 1150 now. Also, do you think the prices of the CPUs and mobos will be really high at launch? Maybe DDR4 will have dropped a bit by then too. Thanks for any info.

No. There will always be a new socket coming up. And builders in the year 2009 didn't just wait for 1156 and DDR3, they still built PCs with 775 and DDR2. By waiting for DDR4 you get nothing.

LGA1151 will support your cooler, unless Intel does something stupid. It's part of the 115X family, and the mounting holes will be the same as 1156, 1155 and 1150.

Whether or not its worth waiting depends on what you've got now and how willing you are to keep it for [at least] another few months. If you've got something reasonable, there may be no rush to pick up a Haswell system right now. I have a Core i5-750 myself, and I'm waiting for at least Broadwell. Depending on reviews I may try to stick it out for Skylake.

Intel has been updating the same SKUs for the last several years and the prices have been fairly stable. I expect a ~$240 Core i5-5xxxK, and a ~$340 Core i7-5xxxK, give or take $10-20, just as we've been getting for the last few generations. Haswell processors today are basically the same prices they've always been, aside from the occasional sale.

Still thanks a lot for replying. Im all about futerproofing beacuse i dont buy that often and atm i have a 1156 which i think is doing a good job keeping up when overclocked to 4ghz (i 870 i7)

You can't really futureproof a PC. You can only make it cost effective. I can tell you 2 things that you should NOT do:

  • Buy the most powerful hardware right now and never upgrade - not cost effective because by the time you need that performance you can get it for cheaper.
  • Buy less now and upgrade later.
