I'm building a pc for about 1200$ Canadian, and I was wondering what cpu would be best for gaming, recording, editing and rendering. I will be using Sony Vegas 13

Please read this guide before posting. We need to know if you need other things like a monitor, keyboard, and mouse before we can tell which would be the best CPU that will fit in your budget.

Do you need a monitor?

How would the 8350 stack up against an i7 4790? (Non-k)

4790 non-K will be better, but if you're getting an i7 non-K then save some money and get a Xeon E3-1230 V3

The 4790 is better than the 8350 in every possible way.

Since you have a pretty large budget, I suggest you get a xeon 1231 v3 which only costs $250 (compared to the $350 of the 4790) and still performs much better than the 8350.

How does the xeon perform compared to the i7 though?

The clock speed is a bit lower which might give you a few less fps in games, but the 1231v3 is basically the same as the 4790 with no integrated graphics and lower clock speeds.

If you wish to spend $350 on a CPU then get a 4790k so that you have the option to overclock it in the future, but if you want to save a bit of money just get the xeon and spend the extra $100 on an SSD or better graphics card or something like that :)

Unless you have a very tight budget that only allows for less than $200 for a CPU, dont even consider the 8350.

They will perform very closely, but IMO it's not worth the extra cost for the slight performance increase. The extra cache of the Xeon will put it even closer to the i7 in things like editing and rendering.

I've got an HP bw22 monitor, 60hz HDMI, vga, dvi.

That's a crazy build, but would the two amd cards outperform a single gtx 970?

the first one because as one because gtx 970 is more convenient then 2 r9 280's as one gtx 970 consume less power and the performance is about the same, and i'd replace the thermaltake tr2 430w psu with and evga 600b psu as the thermaltake tr2 is garbage.
