Hey everyone, I'm in need of your help, desperately,

It has driven me mad enough to have to post this here but here it goes.

When transferring files over an ethernet connection (or wireless) from computer to computer, is it normal for it to knock out the internet for the rest of the house?

I keep thinking it's a bandwidth issue, but I'm unsure.

I was transferring files files from my desktop to my laptop (around 50GB) As soon as it started, my brother instantly ran downstairs to have a go at me, apparently his xbox live went down (he's a console advocate). I checked and true enough, it would not connect to XBL. I tried loading a webpage on my laptop, and nothing would load. It would keep coming up saying I'm not connected to the internet, yet the file transfer was working no problem.

Now that I have stopped/paused the transfer, everything is fine again. Is it a bandwidth issue, or is it just my ISP being a dick (knowing my luck, it's a bit of both)

The same issue occurs when downloading large files (around 1GB+) the download works, but the net goes down. This is also common when downloading games on Steam (praise GabeN for not having to go to the shop any more)

My current broadband plan is this

16-18mbp/s down

0.9 mbp/s up.

I have decided to upgrade to BT Infinity Fibre, but that won't happen until next Friday (21st November), it should hopefully push my speeds up to

78Mbps down

Up to 18Mbps Up.

and BT said they wouldn't throttle the connection and it is fully unlimited.

Would this upgrade help at all?

So Recap

1: When transferring files over an ethernet connection (or wireless) from computer to computer, is it normal for it to knock out the internet for the rest of the house?

2: Would the ISP upgrade help at all for the other issues, although it would be a little too late for this current issue?

3:  Is it a bandwidth issue, or is it just my ISP being a dick (knowing my luck, it's a bit of both)

1. Maybe.. Are you able to see how much it uploads and downloads per second? (For example: I tried to upload something to Google Drive and everything went slow, because it was uploading 5 files a time.)

2. I don't think so, because it's in your local network.

3. Don't think so, if I am right on nr. 2.

When transferring files on your local network ISP bandwidth and speeds are irrelevant. I would think it is your router having bad prioritization. Your upgrade will help with downloading and not effecting others though.

Thanks for the responses. The router I'm using is the BT HomeHub 3 which they provided. When I get the upgrade, They will provide a HomeHub 4 or 5 I believe. I keep telling my parents to get a better 3rd party Router. but they won't. Would I need a speciallised router for fibre or could I just purchase a normal dual band router and use that. That's another point, its only a single band router at the moment, so everything is operating on 2.4GHz

I'm not uploading or downloading, Im doing a straight computer-to-computer connection, just using the router as a bridge point. it just so happens that when I am downloading the same issue seems to arise

I don't have fiber so don't quote me on this but usually it's a special modem or a fiber to ethernet converter box once it's in your house. From there you would attach your router. You really, really should be getting a different router.

I think it is FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) not to the house, so I think it will just be a traditional copper line to the house, don't quote me on that...

Edit: just looked and it is FTTC

usually everything is on the 2.4GHz wifi, but for this transfer, I hooked my laptop and desktop up via ethernet.
