Are my sockets grounded?

Go to solution Solved by ionbasa,

Didn't realize the UK doesn't use Schuko plugs. That is a BS-1363 Plug, yes it should be grounded.

How do I check? Wondering as I'm wondering about my anti static wrist strap, which will be going on my PSU, but that's not much use if the sockets not grounded. Thanks.

P.S. I know radiators are, it's just the strap will barely make it to my wooden kitchen table work surface.

If you have a multimeter, measure the voltage from hot to ground (earth). If there is a voltage, then its safe to assume that the socket is grounded.

I don't think i do.

Well, if your are in the USA, and have a three prong outlet, then you are 99% likely to have a grounded circuit.

(the other 1 % is for improper installations where contractors cheap out and use the neutral conductor as a ground conductor as well.)

Sorry, UK, although we have a 3 pin output.

Regardless, if its the 4 pin schuko outlet, you are generally speaking safe. If its a 2 pin euro plug, then no, it isn't grounded.

Edit:

Yeah, that looks like it is grounded to me. I'm not the best but I think it is.

all modern plugs should be grounded but thats assuming the wiring is proper and functional. to be sure you can get a device called a ground polarity tester which will verify grounded outlets. in the us they run about $10

As was already said, assuming everything is working correctly then it should be grounded, that's what the top pin is for (as well as opening up the bottom of some sockets).

Thanks.

Good :) I don't know anything about electricity, sounds like you do ;)
