Is there a big gap between 970 and 980?

Yeah the 980 will out easily stomp on the 970 by a decent margin, its worth the extra

No it actually is not worth the extra at all.

The 970 can run anything you want and isn't much slower than the 980, you won't even notice a differrence very fast.

But the 980 is in my country almost twice as expensive.

So unless you want to game at 4K I strongly recommand the 970

Yes, the 980 is significantly better than the 970 (although not in proportion to the price). However unless you're doing ultra-demanding gaming using either a high resolution monitor or a high framerate monitor, with today's games you literally cant detect the difference because you're limited by your monitor. I see so many people buying super amazing hardware for their computer, and hook it up to a standard 1080p 60hz monitor and just let all that extra horsepower go to waste. Heck, if all you're doing is gaming on a 1080p 60hz monitor, an R9 290 would be sufficient and those can be found for $250 these days.

At 2560x1440 and higher, the difference is pretty large, with more than 10FPS differences, occasionally 15+

you can get 970 sli for just 100$ more. the aftermarket cooler you can get ACX 2.0 from evga. its not the best but hey EVGA is one of the best companies and you get two fans that do the job.

here in the UK its only around 1/3 more expensive same for the US and most of Europe too so "twice as expensive" is the exeption rather than the rule

Also if you plan to play above 1080p 60 like at 1440p or at 120hz 1080p, then a single 980 is definitely wroth the extra

it will also have more longevity

what's its worth to the end user is subjective, to me I think its 100% worth the extra

If you have enough money for either one, obviously get the 980.

If your budget is limited and, saving some money from the 980 would allow you to spend money elsewhere or something along those lines, the 970 will be a beast graphics cards for a long time on 1080p, no doubt.

Eh, keeping the cash in hand has better longevity as it's way more beneficial to get better price to performance, and then upgrade more frequently when needed by the new game you want to max out, but spending less each time. That being said, the Zotac 970 (which is actually a nice card) goes for around $330 here while the cheapest 980 is around $550. It's not double, but it is 67% more expensive, and it's not 67% better, more like 25%. The 970 is amazing because it hasn't hit diminishing returns on his money, but the 980 has greatly diminished returns on the cost.

This happened with the GTX 670/680, the difference between those cards when they matured through drivers is much much more apparent.

Ok so 970 or 980 for  a 1080p games on maxed graphics?

I would say both are going to do just fine for, at least, 2 years. If your monitor isn't 60+Hz, I guess you won't really perceive the difference between a game running at 70 or 100 FPS. When the 970 finally starts to struggle to run the latest games on Ultra maintaining 60FPS you can always lower the settings, get a second 970 or just get a new video card. The same will happen to the 980, just a year later.

That's what I believe and what I buy. I'm not an Ultra graphics fan so I don't really mind playing on High. Either way, I'd get a 970 with a good cooler, overclock it a bit and enjoy the $200 you saved.

In my opinion, the 980 is not worth the extra $200. Unless you're playing a super demanding game, the difference between the 970 and 980 is negligible. Depending on the Hz of the monitor you are using, the difference probably won't be perceivable anyway.

Hey guys is there a big gap of performance between 970 and a 980?

Thanks :D

roughly 23% more performance for roughly 60% increased cost.

SLI gtx970's are roughly 80% more performance for 100% increased cost (but SLI problems like no support, extra heat/power usage

980 is around 10fps +/- faster on avg than a 970. It's not that much faster like the fanboys will have you think.

your statement is quite arbitrary, its useless... so if a 970 gets 10 fps and your saying a 980 is 10fps better well then that's a good choice. but if a gtx970 gets 167 fps but a 980 gets 10 fps more well then its negligible...

please see the below ACTUAL results reflecting performance: source

note: these gaming results are not overclocked, overclocking gtx9x0 results in roughly 20% increased performance.

It's true in most gaming scenarios the 970 and 980 are but 10fps give or take a bit apart.

Ok instead of static benchmarks and thrown around "yes it is" percentages I'll show you my personal experience with BOTH cards.

Both cards are GTX 980/970 G1 Gaming, the GTX970 is heavily overclocked, I mean to where it won't OC anymore.

The GTX980 is stock clocked.

Only difference is I'm now running Windows 8.1 for today's GTX980 Stock benchmark.

Same Minimum FPS on both cards.

Yep, hence why I didn't mention which one to buy, I've just laid out the figures on the same system config  (Other than the OS).
