So im trying to choose a gaming GPU for my first build and found that the R9 290 is about what i want and what i can afford but what is the difference between the MSI / Gygabit / Sapphire / HIS / Asus radeon     version of the R9 290 ? they all seem to be around the same price ... and finally what is the difference with R9 290 and the R9 290x ? and should  i care about getting the Nvidia equivalent (is it worth) ?

Thank in advance for any help.

You definitely want to go for the one of the Sapphire 290 cards, they have better cooling and are more quiet than the rest.  The 290X isn't worth the extra money over the 290 imo.

290X is a slightly faster card. The difference between the nonreference coolers: mostly looks. All will cool your GPU adequately with acceptably low noise but they just look different. About nVidia, well, that's a tough one. I'd choose it if it meant I didn't have to upgrade my PSU or if I really needed an nVidia-exclusive feature like CUDA, but otherwise there's no real reason to choose one above the other. AMD is a little more affordable for the same performance. nVidia has the best power consumption because it focuses on graphics performance, while AMD sees compute performance as equally important.

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

My rig: The StealthRay. Plans for a newer, better version of its mufflers are already being made.

Dont even get the asus version. They basically used the 780 heatsink and plop it on the 290x board. A few of the heatpipes doesnt even touch the board itself

just pick a company you like/cooler you like
in my opinion the 290x isnt worth it, the 290 is 91% of the 290  and often a bit more than that cheaper.
the nvidia 970 vs 980 is more of the same story except they draw less power but cost more.
if you prefer nvidias features buy nvidia, if you prefer amd's buy amd, both offer some games now (more or less).

myself im getting a 290 (msi most likely, maybe gigabyte WF....or saphire tri-x) because i just sold my card for £100 and its £215 for the msi 290, thats a 2.5x more power with double the vram and double the memory bandwidth for a little over £100...

Get the Sapphire R9 290 better quality , better cooling & quiet

about R9 290x It doesn't worth whatsoever IMO Look at This

and for getting Nvidia equivalent If you don't mind both get AMD since you get more performance / $

I have absolutely no preferences between amd and nvidia and seen that you have more experience then me i think ill stick with amd since you are + i have been recommended the  R9 290. Thank you very much.
