Gpu went from hero to zero

Go to solution Solved by Mauricio G. B.,

turns out the 7970 died horribly, it doesnt work on any computer and i stressed out so i got a 250x in the meantime (till the 960 release or new amd series) thanks for the help

Hey guys, recently i got a used 7970 powercolor turboduo 3GB from a friend  wich i traded my 270x for it, it was working flawlessly until today, i had a bad system crash and had to reinstall my OS, but after every driver update, the screen went nuts and the computer froze, after rebooting and loading windows it dint do anything there was just a black screen showing, no homescreen or logging screen, so i re installed my oss again, after installing the drivers again the gpu did the same so i was like fuck it i went with the IGB from my i5 to finish my work, and when i wanted to test my 7970 again, now is not even recognized by anything and doesnt ouput video at all i touched it to see if current was passing by since the fans are spinning and it is just lukewarm idk what to do i dont have enough money to buy a decent gpu

make sure you install the proper AMD 14.4 or 14.7 drivers for your OS and card

dont use 14.9 or beta versions at all

Could you try the 7970 in a different PC?

Don't use the beta drivers. Do you know what caused the system crash?

Check cable, check connectors on GPU, check power connectors, Check drivers, Check PCI-E slot. If all else fails you might have a dead or defective GPU.

Wait? How did you trade a 7970 for a R9 270x those things aren't even close to equal. You sir either have godly haggling skills or you got swindled.

I will guarantee that the original crash was caused by him using AMD 14.9 (not-beta) WHQL drivers, as they do teh same thing on many (if not all) peoples computers. The safest AMD driver at the moment is CCC 14.4.

As for it not responding currently at all, I wouls suggest first checking that the default GPU in BIOS is set to PCIe and not Intel/Onboard/CPU as the OP said he went to IGP to finish his work. After that, I would suggest a reinstall of OS with CCC 14.4 IF the card still functions.

Ehhh I wouldn't be 100% sure - best to check.

hey guys, well after reinstalling windows like 8 times (hopefully not doing it again) im sure that the PCI-e slot works fine, i have another dead card lol.......... a HD 5850 that wont even make the system boot, so i used that thing and it did not boot as usual, as for the 7970 yes i checked it with everything, yes i was using 14.9 since  it came out and it was working flawlessly until i reinstalled the OS wich it was working fine, until i tried to close BF4 after finishing playing it would, then it crashed, then the issue happened, and then all the other stuff im going tomorrow to check with several other PC´s from friends and work to test the card, im pretty sure the PSU is more than enough and as far as i got it the friend who had it owed me money and only used it to play league and wow soo.... yea and i use it for 3D modeling and random crap

Is there something awfully wrong with 14.9?  I've been using it and maybe that's what caused my card to brick.

On my system it caused instant system lockups on boot. Disabling Crossfire, removing the second card, reinstalling the OS, downgrading teh OS, and changing the motherboard does not help. 14.4 however is as rock solid as an AMD driver gets (still erratic FPS numbers, and inconsistent CFx performance, but that is expected).

ok i made it work, and i was really happy, while installing the 14.4 Drivers the same error ocurred, computer froze screen went funky colors and BAM same issue all over again ( to make it work i disabled the IGPU in the bios and now its disabled and cant acces the bios since i dont have video, ill guess ill just buy a R7-250 and cry in a corner

edit, so probably the gpu works, my system is probably insane, im going to reset the CMOS and reinstall windows 7, the 8.1 iso i have might be bad, and see if that helps, it was working good with the 14.9 drivers until i went to windows 8
