Is it worth overclocking a gtx 980 for the little extra performance? Does overclocking it really give you much more performance as well?

Yes, you won't have any negative issues overclocking until you over volt. Just use msi after burner, set the a core clock to 1450 and let it fly.

If you don't feel comfortable, then don't do it. I don't overclock because I don't feel comfortable. But it does give a noticeable boost in performance if there is no bottleneck.

A. YES INCREDIBLY WORTH IT. the gains aren't little at all.

I went from a 11500 3DMark score to 13500 with the OC.

Fact is the GTX 970 are all OC and score 10500 so without the OC on the 980 the price just isn't worth it.

B. flash the gamestable v1 bios and call it a day.

I put +250 for clock rate and + 500 for memory clock in MSI afterburner and capped out around 1440ish mhz on the cpu clock rate.

After flashing the gamestable bios I get 1506 mhz and called it a day without messing around in MSI afterburner.

it's always worth it.

for example i was able to overclock my r9 290 from 947 to 1200, that's a 27% increase!... i think. why wouldn't you?

Here is a post I made showing 3Dmark scores on my 980 stock and with a quick un-optimized overclock.

In short, yes it is worth your time to do a bit of overclocking on these cards.
