(Solved) Can't update Nvidia drivers for GTX 650 2GB

inmysites

I got this gtx 650 2gb card from craigslist. Not sure what brand it is (see pics). I have tried many times to install the latest drivers for it, but it won't work. Heres what happens:

the driver starts installing.

(windows 7)

The computer blue screens midway through installing.

(windows 8)

The computer restarts after installing the driver.

then....

(windows 7)

The computer restarts and then blue screens, then restarts, then repeats.

(windows 8)

The computer restarts, shows the blue screen with the :( face, and then restarts again. Then it rolls back to before the driver was installed.

What i have tried:

First off i tried installing it on a fresh install of windows 7, with no other OS on my system.

Then i completely wiped windows 7 and installed all other drivers for the computer. Then tried installing the driver.

Then i tried windows 8, the same 2 steps above.

Then i tried doing the driver install the manual way (device manager > GPU > update driver > select extracted driver stuff > same result on BOTH OS's!

THEN i tried installing an older version of the driver, (one step down) same result

I continued going one step down the list of drivers for the GPU on Nvidia's website (re-installing the OS with each go, and installing all other drivers)

Same result, even with the beta drivers

Until i got to 337.88, and it worked!

I then was stupid enough to try and update my driver through geforce experiance, same blue screen result.

Wiped OS and installed windows 8, installed drivers, installed 337.88 and it works.

The problem is this driver is old and has strange issues with DirectX

For example, when i try to play Alien Isolation, the game fails to start and says that no directX card was found.

Not all games do this, just a few.

Batman Arkham origins works, Banished, Kerbal Space Program, Minecraft, Just Cause 2 all work. BTW they run as expected for the 650, i looked up benchmarks for the games and they were about the same as they play on my 650. NOTE that i do have the latest version of DirectX installed.

I am at my wits end here!

If anyone can help me that would be greatly appreciated!

Here are my computer specs:

Lenovo H430 UPGRADED

UPGRADED GPU Gtx 650 2GB

UPGRADED PSU 550w (Can't remember the brand)

i5-3330

8GB RAM

1TB HDD

Attached are pics of the gpu, i can't find the model or the maker anywhere on it, or even online. And the guy i purchased it from is no help.

It says Nvidia on the card, but it doesn't look like the reference design.

Happened to me a couple of months ago with my GTX 660, The updates are mainly for the gpuboost and the 700 - 900 series so you wont gain much from the updates..

I dont know the brand.
Do the GPU have any additional power requirements, 6pin?
If it doesnt have any additional power it is most likely a 200 or 400 series card with a 650 sticker.

Download GPU-Z and see what GPU it says you have.

I know you probably don't want to hear this, but I have a hunch that you got scammed and that is just a GTX650 sticker on a lousy 200 or 400 series card.

That nvidia sticker just reminds me of their old style logo, not something they would put on a new card.

I uploaded what GPU-z had to say. It say's its a galaxy edition...? And also for an old 200 or 400 series card, it performs almost identical to the gtx 650 benchmarks of just cause 2 and batman.. so i don't think it's a different card.

um....sorry to break it to you, but that is, from what I can tell, its a fake card

The GTX 650 doesn't have a 256-bit bus nor DDR3 memory as the sticker state it has...

And the logo on the cooler looks fake  as well...

Edit: also an actual gtx 650 has a PCI-E 3.0 interface, not 2.0

I just took a look at Galaxy's GTX 650s, and none of them look like yours so... I'm gonna go ahead and say it's a fake, unless someone put another cards cooler onto that one.

It's probably fake. Call that guy and demand your money back.

Here is a real 650.

That matte black PCB though! I didn't even know a counterfeit market for GPUs even existed!

Well that sucks haha. Thanks for the help, any way i could identify what GPU it really is? Or did they actually make a gpu and just make it named the gtx 650?

Id say it is a 9500GT with a modified BIOS and 2 gb RAM becouse of the clock speed

Would it be possible to re-flash the card back to normal?

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/400740418042?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

Given it has no power in I thought it was a gtx650-e but with 2gb ddr3 not 1gb gddr5 (http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/graphics-cards/1298488/asus-gtx-650-e)

the specs the seller reports:

Specifications:
1. Chipset/GPU Manufacturer: NVIDIA
2. Model: GeForceGTX650
3. Applicable Type: Desktops
4. Core Code: GK107
5. Manufacturing Process: 28nm
6. Core Frequency: 1000mHz

Would it be possible to re-flash the card back to normal?

That would only change the name to 9500 GT instead of GTX 650.

And you will probably have to modify the bios so it will accept the card or else it will become a doorstop.

A gtx 650 goes for roughly 100 bucks

But a 740 is newer with about the same performance while only consting about 70 bucks.

But you should get a 750ti or greater if you are upgrading since you will get bottlenecked by a gtx 650 or gt 740 in new games.

There is really 3 options for you,

Being on the alleged gtx 650(9500gt) and simply deal with it

Upgrading to a GT 740(But being bottlenecked)

Or upgrading down the road to a gtx 750ti when you got the money and you feel you need a upgrade.
