@D_lete

As a car enthusiast, racing sim junky and with real racing experience, I feel I should chime in here.

First, what kind of racing game are you interested in and how do you intent to control it?

If you're using a game pad, like a 360 controller, then I would suggest you stick with racing games that are more on the arcade side. Like the Grid series, NFS series, etc.

If you plan on using a proper wheel and pedals, then you could venture into the more hard-core racing sims, like Assetto Corsa, Race Room Racing Experience, iRacing, etc.

The main reason I say this is because with the more hard-core sims, the game pads simply don't have enough feedback and precision input to properly control many of the cars with all the assists turned off. It can be done with some or all of the assists turned on (traction/stability control, ABS, automatic shifting etc.), but IMO this defeats the whole purpose of a racing sim, which is meant to simulate real physics and a more true-to-life experience.

But to each, his/her own. Assetto Corsa looks absolutely beautiful and if you can manage it with the assists on with a game pad, then I say go ahead and enjoy it. I prefer to have to use all my concentration and effort trying to wrangle a 1200hp late-80's turbo F1 car (Lotus 98T) around a track with no assists, white-knuckled on the wheel and sweating, but that's just me. To other people, that's not fun. So it all depends on what sort of experience you're looking for. :)

iRacing? PC kinda sucks for racing, there's nothing like Forza or Gran Turismo.

Again, depends on the experience you're looking for and what aspects of the game you value most. For me it's pure realism in terms of both physics and visuals (with physics taking priority). Thus far, Assetto Corsa is the best true-to-life racing sim I've tried yet, based on my own real life racing experience. R3E and iRacing follow closely behind, only because they aren't as visually accurate.

Racing along at the speed limit :D

does racing suck on PC because you dont like it or you're not half decent at it???

No? I already explained why if you would read. I love racing games and I'm pretty damn good at it.

I want a more "arcade-y" style game. There's no game on PC that is like Forza, Gran Turismo, and the dozens of dead games from the XBox/PS2 era that have the right style of game, but feel and run like a simulator.

In that case, you are correct. There isn't anything on PC like Forza and GT, unfortunately.

I played the living snot out of GT4 on my PS2 and Forza 2, 3 and 4 on Xbox 360 before I switcher over to PC. On the consoles, it's the closest you can get to a sim and the level of customization was second to none, especially in Forza. I've tried Forza 5 on my friend's Xbox One and it's pretty good. *cough* and runs at 1080p 60fps *cough*

Someone needs to have one of those properly ported to PC. They will make boatloads of money.

Well, progress is being made with Xbox 360 emulators so it should only be a matter of time before we can run Forza... PS3 will be more difficult of course.

hi, i've got a new pc and i'd like to check out a racing game, but i don't know which one is a good one, Can you guys give me a good title?

SHIFT 2 Unleashed has to be my favorite racing game so far, but The Crew when it comes out will probably take over though.

Too bad this will likely never happen. Microsoft already ported Forza 5 to PC to show off DirectX 12, but it will never be finished or released. Microsoft wants to keep the successful franchise on the Xbox platform so that they don't lose more customers that would switch over to the PC if it weren't for games like Forza being Xbox exclusives.

Not talking about that, I'd never bother downloading that for a racing game.

Not the newest, Forza 5. I'm talking about Forza 4 for xbox 360.

After a quick search, it looks like there already might be some working 360 emulators that can run F4. Might have to try this out now... hehe

  • 1 year later...

Like MEC-777 I have done the real racing experience. It is VERY difficult to recreate that sensation sitting in front a a monitor or 3. What you need to understand is that you have to fool your senses into thinking you are moving and that is not easy. These racing sim rigs that shake, rattle and roll are not the real answer either. Just look at what the F! teams are using for simulation when they are not on the track. Millions of $ are spent on just figuring out how to recreate this environment. To me the ultimate gaming rig for the home will not be in the home. It will be in the garage. A full size car with a 180 degree screen serving as the windshield. Adapt your racing wheel and pedals to fit the interior, plastic pipe would serve as the roll cage. Used racing seats can be found online. You could even install a seat for your spotter. You get my drift.
