1080p to 1440p Worth the $$$

AMD Lover

I'd say the 4k route isn't quite viable yet. It still takes at least 2 980s to power most games to a nice 60fps across the board, and you have to settle for TN panels with the lower end 4k displays.

Another year and 4k will be well worth while.

And that, sir, is where you are mistaken ;) the cheapest 4k ips screen is just 100ish $ more than the cheaper tn ones and I'm happily gaming at 4k on a single R9 290 :) (granted, with a little compromise on detail, but honestly I gladly removed aa and ao for the sake of 4k, it's 100% worth it) besides he could also use it for a surround 1080p setup when gaming and have all the 4k glory when working (I assume he'd be working with it, otherwise he wouldn't buy 2 monitors instead of one or 3).

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Well, I actually picked up a 144hz TN panel to complement my Dell P2414H (IPS) since I wanted to try 144hz, and I do wish I had picked up another IPS panel instead. But I'd take the extra screen space of a 4k display over the better colors on an IPS display.

How do you find the P2414H? That was actually my second choice to the U2414H. Basically the same thing, but with a thicker bezel.

What monitor might that be?

Yeah, see until I can have all the goodness, I won't upgrade. I don't want to drop detail and effects for a higher ppi.

Plus not all games run as smoothly on 4k. For example I'm sure Star Citizen won't.

I don't really mind it, but I'm also using the two screens as two entirely separate displays (the P2414H for everything, and my BenQ XL2411Z for gaming). My P2414H is offset at about a 150ºangle (or 30º depending on how you look at it), so that may affect things.

I had no issues gaming on it; and when I'm gaming, I don't think I can really tell my BenQ from the P2414H. The BenQ doesn't seem any better, but I also haven't tried going back to gaming on my P2414H, so it might be one of those things that didn't bother me, but now that I've experienced 144hz @ 1ms, it would....

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&sku=860-BBCD this is the monitor :D

Haven't tried star citizen, but the batman games and bioshock infinite fare pretty well :) besides, even 2 R9 290s are about as expensive as a single 980, and they'd have no problem maxing out almost everything.

of course you can have two monitors without working, but usually you don't change them both at the same time if you aren't. Just an assumption though, I don't really know what the op has.

So I've got two 23" 1080p IPS displays right now and I probably couldn't buy two new 1440p monitors at the same time but I may be able to get one. I was looking at Dell's 27" IPS 1440p monitor (6ms RT) thats on sale for about $560 and was wondering if it was worth it?

1440p is absolutely completely worth getting. Just like gsync, once you try it you won't want to go back. For your budget I'd recommend an ASUS PB278Q, they're $479 on newegg right now. You might want to think about getting a second 780 for sli though, unless you don't mind turning your settings down.

Ahh I mistook what you said. I thought you meant that the 4k monitor was only a little more than the 1440p, this one is twice the price.

True, but they use a ton of power. I was going to get a pair until I saw what Pascal was bringing, now I'll just stick to 1080p for another year.

I really don't see the point in moving from dual 1080p to dual 1440p. You can go dual 4k screens for around the same price. The only downside is a single GTX 780 is more than likely going to struggle to push games at that resolution.

Well, for what its worth, unless I see my two panels in gaming side-by-side I can't really tell that the colors are washed out...When I see them side by side or focus on the game, it becomes obvious; but if I'm actually playing the game (without the game being mirrored across both screens) I don't really notice the color difference either.
