1080p to 1440p Worth the $$$

So I've got two 23" 1080p IPS displays right now and I probably couldn't buy two new 1440p monitors at the same time but I may be able to get one. I was looking at Dell's 27" IPS 1440p monitor (6ms RT) thats on sale for about $560 and was wondering if it was worth it?

Your GPU will have a harder time running 1440p, how is performance atm for you? Imo 560 is way too much, unless you really need it for a specific purpose.

$560 sounds pretty steep for a 27" monitor, 1440P isn't that much noticeable to 1080P. the only real difference I've noticed is how well the colours look.

 

If you've got the GPU power to spare I guess it's a good investment.

If I were you I'd get another 23" and have a triple monitor setup.

Performace is pretty good, I have BF4 set to the "Max" in the game and I have DSR set to 4K in the game. Stays above 60fps unless something blows up even then my min is like 38

What is the size of the 1080p monitor you're comparing to a 27" 1440p? This matters a lot.

The difference in ppi between a 27 inch 1080p monitor and 27 inch 1440p monitor is significant.

I thought you were at least comparing a 21-22 inch 1080p monitor.

Price difference is more than 4 times of single 22" 1080p monitor, or more than 2 times of 27" 1080p monitor for single 1440p monitor in my country

But its more of weather can you afford it kind of thing IMO. I would love upgrade.

I think it's worth the money to have a 1440p monitor for gaming and a second 1080p to monitor stuff (p0rn) and your video card can probably handle it.

However, that's really subjective as some people don't find the 1440p experience any better than the 1080p's. You should try a 1440p monitor before buying it to be sure you'll actually enjoy it. But be aware: once you go 1440p, anything less than that looks so bad.

Considering you can get a 24"  60hz IPS 4k display for like $130~ more, I don't really see 1440p as being a smart move at the moment. And if you go with a TN 4k panel, you can get a 28" for like $500.

IMO, the difference is how much you have to invest in hardware to be able to play at, say, 60FPS average on a 4k and on a 1440p monitor with the same quality but without AA. I have played on both and the difference between 4k and 1440p is huge but it's not worth the cash you need to invest to be able to play at that big of a resolution. 1080p, 1440p, 4k, they're all subjective to one's perception and also to one's economic power (not sure if that's the right expression, just how much cash you got to spend with futile things).

I'd say the 4k route isn't quite viable yet. It still takes at least 2 980s to power most games to a nice 60fps across the board, and you have to settle for TN panels with the lower end 4k displays.

Another year and 4k will be well worth while.

I agree, 4k isn't quite 'easily' (realistically~) achievable atm; but I think it makes a lot more sense to get a 4k monitor rather than a 1440p monitor.

I've been spoiled by PLS/IPS. I can't go back. So much so that the monitor I was lending a friend is staying with him, and when I get my PC back next month I'll be redoing my monitors as well as overhauling the storage and GPU.

 

By the time graphics cards come that can destroy 4k (year and a bit), there should be a lot more 4k options out there, and they'll likely be loads cheaper.

I couldn't disagree more. If MS fix the god awful scaling for high PPI screens then maybe. 1440p is a really nice sweet spot that looks good and isn't impossible to drive.

Well, I don't disagree, theres a reason I didn't buy a 4k display. But, if the choice is 1440p or 4k, then I'd no question go 4k. But if the choice is 1080p vs. 1440p vs. 4k, then I'd go 1080p until 4k becomes more affordable / easier to drive.

I'm same boat as you though for sure. I'm buying 2 U2414H's to use until Pascal comes out, and hopefully they come out with a 4k 21:9 34" beast. I've got a year and a bit. Pleeeeease do it!

Well, I actually picked up a 144hz TN panel to complement my Dell P2414H (IPS) since I wanted to try 144hz, and I do wish I had picked up another IPS panel instead. But I'd take the extra screen space of a 4k display over the better colors on an IPS display.
